(TJV NEWS) A cruise ship has become stranded off the coast of Cape Verde amid fears of a serious infectious disease outbreak, according to reports cited by BBC News.
The vessel, identified as the MV Hondius, is carrying around 150 passengers and crew and was traveling from Argentina toward West Africa when several passengers began falling ill. Three people have reportedly died and at least three others are seriously sick, prompting urgent concern among health authorities.
Officials say at least one case of hantavirus has been confirmed, while several other infections remain under investigation. The virus is typically linked to exposure to rodents and their droppings and can cause severe respiratory illness. Human-to-human transmission is considered rare, but not impossible in limited circumstances.
The ship is now effectively stuck offshore after Cape Verde authorities refused permission for it to dock, citing public health concerns. Passengers and crew have been placed in isolation onboard while international health agencies, including the World Health Organization, coordinate response efforts and possible medical evacuations.
One British passenger previously evacuated to South Africa has tested positive and is receiving intensive care, while two additional patients are also being considered for evacuation if conditions allow. Authorities from multiple countries are now involved in managing the situation, including plans for possible relocation to alternative ports such as in Spain’s Canary Islands.
Health officials have stressed that, despite the severity of the situation onboard, the broader public risk remains low and there is currently no recommendation for travel restrictions.
The situation remains fluid as investigators continue working to determine the source of the outbreak and whether infections originated onboard or earlier in the voyage.
