Mamdani Doubles Down on Endorsement of DSA Candidate Who Posted that the US a ‘F–king Disgrace’

By: Carl Schwartzbaum

Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday forcefully defended his endorsement of progressive congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, refusing to distance himself from the Democratic Socialist contender despite the emergence of numerous controversial social media posts that have generated widespread criticism and intensified debate over the ideological direction of New York’s progressive movement.

According to a report on Tuesday in The New York Post, Mamdani reaffirmed his support for Avila Chevalier during an appearance at an unrelated event in Queens, dismissing concerns over a series of inflammatory online statements that surfaced shortly after his endorsement became public.

The controversy erupted after Mamdani formally backed Avila Chevalier’s challenge against longtime Congressman Adriano Espaillat. Within hours of the endorsement, critics began circulating social media posts attributed to the candidate in which she sharply attacked prominent Democratic figures, criticized law enforcement, and used provocative language directed at the United States itself.

Despite the growing backlash, Mamdani signaled that he remains firmly committed to supporting her candidacy, portraying her campaign as part of a broader political movement focused on economic issues and working-class advocacy.

“I’m excited at the focus on Darializa’s campaign in that it brings to light the possibility of electing a champion for working people,” Mamdani told reporters, according to The New York Post. “I think that what we are seeing is a real groundswell of excitement around that same candidacy,” he continued. “I’m excited to help be a part of that.”

The remarks represented the mayor’s most direct defense yet of Avila Chevalier following the controversy and underscored his determination to stand by a candidate whose political profile closely aligns with many of the ideological priorities championed by New York City’s progressive left.

The scrutiny surrounding Avila Chevalier intensified almost immediately after Mamdani’s endorsement was announced.

According to The New York Post report, dozens of historical social media posts emerged that were inflammatory, divisive, and deeply controversial.

Among the posts attracting attention were comments directed at members of her own political party. One resurfaced statement reportedly referred to former President Joe Biden as a “rapist,” while others mocked former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The criticism extended beyond establishment Democrats.

Avila Chevalier reportedly directed harsh remarks toward Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senator Bernie Sanders, two politicians who are often regarded as ideological allies within the progressive movement.

The breadth of the criticism surprised many observers because it appeared to target figures across multiple factions of the Democratic Party rather than focusing solely on political opponents.

The revelations quickly transformed what might otherwise have been a routine congressional endorsement into a broader debate about political rhetoric, ideological purity, and accountability for past public statements.

Political observers noted that the timing of the controversy created an additional challenge for Mamdani.

As mayor of the nation’s largest city, every endorsement he issues is subject to heightened scrutiny. Critics argued that his decision to embrace Avila Chevalier raised legitimate questions regarding political judgment and the standards he applies when evaluating candidates seeking public office.

The controversy also emerged at a moment when Mamdani himself remains a polarizing figure in New York politics. His administration has repeatedly faced criticism over issues involving public safety, relations with the Jewish community, and ideological disputes surrounding progressive governance.

For opponents of the mayor, his continued support for Avila Chevalier appeared consistent with what they view as a broader tendency to align with controversial figures on the political left.

When confronted directly about the content of Avila Chevalier’s past statements, Mamdani declined to criticize her.

Instead, he emphasized her explanation that many of the posts no longer reflect her current views. “She said herself that a lot of these don’t reflect her views today,” Mamdani said, according to The New York Post report. “And I’m incredibly excited to be supporting her today and her vision.”

The mayor’s response reflected a broader argument frequently advanced by political allies who contend that candidates should be judged primarily on their current positions rather than statements made years earlier.

That argument, however, has done little to silence critics who believe some of the resurfaced remarks raise legitimate questions about temperament and judgment.

At the center of the political battle stands Congressman Adriano Espaillat, a veteran Democratic lawmaker who has represented his district for years and remains a significant figure within New York politics.

Avila Chevalier’s challenge reflects a growing trend within Democratic politics in which younger progressive candidates attempt to unseat established incumbents whom they view as insufficiently aligned with left-wing priorities.

Such contests have become increasingly common in recent election cycles, particularly in urban districts where progressive activists believe opportunities exist to reshape the party’s ideological direction.

Mamdani’s endorsement signals that he sees Avila Chevalier’s campaign as part of that larger movement.

His remarks repeatedly focused on themes of economic justice, working-class representation, and grassroots political energy.

By describing her as a “champion for working people,” the mayor sought to frame the campaign as a contest centered on policy priorities rather than controversy.

The dispute has also reopened broader discussions about the internal dynamics of the Democratic Party. Over the last decade, progressive organizations and democratic socialist groups have exerted growing influence within certain segments of the party.

Advocates argue that these movements have helped focus attention on issues such as affordable housing, healthcare access, economic inequality, labor rights, and criminal justice reform.

Critics, however, contend that some factions within the movement have embraced increasingly confrontational rhetoric that risks alienating moderate voters and undermining broader coalition-building efforts.

The controversy surrounding Avila Chevalier has therefore become about more than one congressional campaign. For many observers, it serves as a case study in the ongoing struggle over the Democratic Party’s future identity and political messaging.

Rather than retreating from the endorsement, Mamdani appeared determined to reinforce his support. His comments conveyed confidence that the candidate’s campaign will continue to attract enthusiasm despite the negative publicity.

By characterizing the attention surrounding the race as evidence of a “groundswell of excitement,” he suggested that public interest may ultimately benefit rather than damage her candidacy.

Whether that assessment proves accurate remains to be seen.

Political history offers examples of candidates who successfully weathered controversies involving past statements, but it also contains numerous examples where resurfaced remarks became enduring liabilities.

The coming months will likely determine which path Avila Chevalier’s campaign follows.

As The New York Post reported, the debate surrounding Mamdani’s endorsement shows little sign of disappearing.

The controversy has already attracted significant media attention and is likely to remain a prominent issue as the congressional campaign develops. For Mamdani, the episode represents another test of his ability to navigate political turbulence while advancing his broader progressive agenda.

For Avila Chevalier, it presents the challenge of convincing voters that her current platform should outweigh questions raised by her past statements.

And for New York’s Democratic electorate, the dispute offers another glimpse into the increasingly intense ideological battles reshaping the party at both the local and national levels.

As scrutiny continues, one fact remains clear: Mamdani has chosen not to retreat from the endorsement. Instead, he has publicly embraced the candidate and her campaign, signaling that he believes the political vision she represents is worth defending despite the controversy that now surrounds it.
