New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill is claiming victory in the ongoing battle over a controversial immigration detention center in Newark, but federal officials are pushing back hard, saying the governor’s actions created the very problem she is now celebrating, according to the NY Post.
The dispute centers on Delaney Hall, a privately operated immigration detention facility in Newark that has become the focus of a high-profile political standoff between New Jersey Democrats and the federal government. The facility had been slated to house detainees for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but legal and political challenges from state officials have complicated those plans, the NY Post reported.
Sherrill announced this week that she viewed the latest developments as a win for New Jersey communities opposed to expanded federal immigration detention operations. According to the NY Post, the governor said her administration’s efforts helped halt what critics had described as an expansion of immigration detention in the state.
But the Department of Homeland Security quickly rejected that claim.
In a sharp response cited by the NY Post, DHS officials argued that Sherrill’s own actions contributed to the operational confusion surrounding Delaney Hall. Federal officials said the state had created unnecessary obstacles and political drama around a facility that was already dealing with regulatory and administrative complications.
According to the NY Post, DHS accused the governor of politicizing immigration enforcement for public relations purposes rather than working cooperatively with federal authorities.
The back-and-forth comes as immigration enforcement remains a flashpoint in New Jersey politics. Delaney Hall has drawn sustained criticism from immigrant advocacy groups and Democratic officials who oppose expanded detention capacity in the state. Supporters of the facility, however, argue it serves a necessary role in federal immigration enforcement and public safety operations.
The NY Post reported that Delaney Hall has long been a contentious site in Newark, where local leaders have repeatedly challenged its use for federal detention purposes.
Sherrill’s office has argued that local communities should have greater input when federal agencies seek to operate detention centers within their borders. The governor has also emphasized concerns about transparency and oversight.
DHS officials, however, told the NY Post that federal immigration enforcement facilities operate under federal authority and accused state officials of interfering with established procedures. They said the delays and uncertainty surrounding Delaney Hall stemmed largely from political resistance at the state level rather than any unilateral federal action.
The public clash highlights the broader tensions between Democratic-led states and federal immigration enforcement agencies.
