A massive steel beam recovered from the wreckage of the September 11 attacks has begun a nationwide tour meant to honor victims, first responders, and the enduring legacy of one of the darkest days in American history, according to the New York Post.

-pound section of steel, pulled from the ruins of the World Trade Center’s South Tower, was unveiled in a solemn ceremony near Ground Zero before setting off on what organizers are calling a “Steel Across America” tour, the New York Post reported. The artifact is being described by supporters as a sacred symbol of sacrifice, resilience, and national unity.

According to the New York Post, the tour is being organized by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a charity founded in memory of fallen FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller. Foundation CEO Frank Siller told the Post that the steel beam carries what he described as the “soul” of those who were lost on September 11, emphasizing its emotional and historical weight.

“This steel is so significant,” Siller said, as quoted by the New York Post, noting that it represents both the destruction and the heroism of that day. He added, according to the Post report, that the goal of the tour is to ensure Americans never forget the events of 9/11 or the sacrifices made in its aftermath.

miles across the United States, making over 35 stops in cities and landmark locations. The New York Post reported that destinations include sites such as Mount Rushmore, the USS Arizona Memorial, and Space Center Houston, allowing Americans nationwide to engage directly with a physical piece of history.

At each stop, visitors will have the opportunity to see and, in many cases, touch the steel beam. According to the Post, organizers believe this hands-on experience creates a powerful emotional connection that helps younger generations, many of whom were not alive during the 2001 attacks, understand the magnitude of the tragedy.

The New York Post also reported that the tour will feature appearances from 9/11 first responders, survivors, and family members of victims. These individuals are expected to share personal stories, adding human perspective to the physical artifact as it travels across the country.

Frank Siller told the Post that preserving memory is central to the mission. “People are not going to experience in their life to touch a piece of steel that was part of one of the towers,” he said, as reported by the New York Post, stressing the importance of passing these experiences on to future generations.

The tour is scheduled to culminate in New York City on September 11, 2026, marking the 25th anniversary of the attacks, according to the New York Post report. Organizers say the final stop will serve as a national moment of reflection and remembrance.
