A tragic early-morning crash in New Jersey claimed the life of an 18-year-old yeshiva student and left another young man critically injured, sending shockwaves through the tight-knit Lakewood community, according to VIN News.
The deadly incident unfolded just after 4 a.m. in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, at the intersection of U.S. Route 130 and Spirit of 76 Boulevard. Authorities responding to the scene discovered a severely mangled vehicle with two occupants trapped inside, highlighting the violent nature of the collision. As VIN News reported, the car had struck a truck, leading to catastrophic damage.
The victim was identified as Eli Shpensky, an 18-year-old from Lakewood who was widely known within the local community. According to VIN News, Shpensky was riding as a passenger in the vehicle when the crash occurred. Emergency responders found him unconscious and unresponsive at the scene and immediately began lifesaving efforts, including CPR. Despite their attempts, he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The driver, another young man, was also trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by emergency crews. VIN News reported that he was transported to a nearby trauma center in critical condition, where he remains hospitalized. Members of the community identified him for prayers as Mordechai Zelig ben Blima, as family and friends anxiously await updates on his condition.
According to initial information cited by VIN News, the two young men had been returning from what was described as a “chesed” trip—an act of volunteer service—when the crash occurred. The detail has only deepened the sense of tragedy surrounding the incident, as the victims were reportedly engaged in helping others just hours before the fatal collision.
Authorities have not yet determined exactly what caused the crash. Investigators are working to piece together the sequence of events that led to the vehicle striking the truck in the early morning darkness. VIN News noted that the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified and is actively assisting in the investigation, with more information expected as officials continue their review.
The loss has devastated the Lakewood community, where Shpensky’s family is well known. He was identified as the son of Moshe and Leah Shpensky, and news of his sudden passing has prompted an outpouring of grief and support. Community members and organizations quickly mobilized in response to the tragedy, offering assistance to the family during this difficult time, VIN News reported.
In the aftermath of the crash, volunteers worked closely with authorities to ensure that proper procedures were followed in accordance with Jewish law, including efforts related to the handling of the body. Funeral arrangements were still pending as officials completed the necessary steps, according to VIN News.
The incident underscores the dangers of early-morning travel and remains under active investigation. Authorities are expected to release additional details.
