Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed a slate of far-left Democratic primary candidates in New York City who are pushing policies including the decriminalization of prostitution and major expansions of publicly funded programs, according to the NY Post.

The endorsements, announced ahead of the upcoming Democratic primaries, include candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America and other progressive activist groups. The NY Post reported that the slate features candidates running in competitive Assembly districts across the city, many of whom are challenging incumbent Democrats.

Among the policy positions highlighted, several candidates support legalizing or decriminalizing sex work, arguing it would reduce harm, improve safety conditions for workers, and reduce police interactions in the industry. Others in the endorsed group back sweeping economic proposals such as free public college tuition, expanded public transit subsidies, rent relief measures, and other government-funded programs.

According to the NY Post, critics have characterized the slate as promoting what they describe as “freebie-filled” agendas, arguing that the combined cost of the proposed policies could significantly expand state and city spending obligations. Opponents also argue that some of the positions, particularly around prostitution laws, reflect a broader ideological shift within parts of the Democratic Party toward more permissive regulatory frameworks.

The NY Post reported that the candidates endorsed by Ocasio-Cortez include individuals running in Brooklyn and Queens districts with platforms centered on housing affordability, labor rights, criminal justice reform, and expanded social services. Several are affiliated with progressive organizations that have gained influence in New York Democratic politics in recent election cycles.

Supporters of the slate argue that their policy proposals are designed to address rising costs of living in New York City, including housing, transportation, and education. They contend that existing systems have failed to adequately serve working-class residents and that bold policy changes are necessary to close economic inequality gaps.

The NY Post reported that one of the central policy divides in these races involves public safety and criminal justice. Some of the endorsed candidates support reducing or eliminating certain forms of police involvement in sex work enforcement, while also advocating for alternative public safety models that rely more heavily on social services and community-based intervention.

The endorsements also reflect Ocasio-Cortez’s continued influence within the city’s progressive wing of the Democratic Party. The NY Post noted that her backing has previously helped boost like-minded candidates and signal ideological alignment within closely watched primary contests.

Political observers say the slate underscores a growing divide between the party’s progressive and moderate factions in New York, particularly over issues such as policing, taxation, and the role of government in providing social services.

Moderate Democrats and critics cited by the NY Post argue that the policies backed by the endorsed candidates could strain public budgets and alienate more centrist voters in competitive districts. Progressive supporters counter that the proposals are responsive to economic pressures facing everyday New Yorkers
