(TJV NEWS) U.S. President Donald Trump provided a somber and uncertain update on Thursday regarding Edan Alexander, the last known American hostage believed to still be alive in Gaza. Speaking at a National Day of Prayer event at the White House, Trump expressed deep concern about Alexander’s condition, revealing, “We don’t know how he’s doing, really… we think we know, and hopefully [it’s] positive.”
Trump’s comments follow a distressing period in which Israeli officials initially reported that 24 of the 59 hostages still held by Hamas were believed to be alive in Gaza. However, the actual number of survivors remains unclear, with speculation growing about their fate as the conflict continues.
Alexander, a 21-year-old New Jersey native and soldier in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), was taken captive by Hamas during the brutal October 7, 2023, assault that saw more than 250 people kidnapped across southern Israel. Despite previous optimism that Alexander could be released, recent developments have cast doubt on the prospects of a safe return. Trump acknowledged the emotional strain this uncertainty has placed on Alexander’s family, who were present at the White House during the speech.
“We’re working very, very hard to save your son,” Trump said, addressing the Alexander family directly. “We have news coming out — both good and bad.” The President’s remarks highlighted the tense and heartbreaking situation for the families of those still being held by Hamas, especially in light of the fluctuating and conflicting reports about the hostages’ whereabouts and well-being.
The Algemeiner reported that the update from Trump, which included a mention of Alexander’s parents, Adi and Yael, seated in the audience, further amplified the growing international anxiety over the hostages’ fate. As the situation in Gaza remains volatile, Trump’s comments offered a sobering reminder of the uncertainty and urgency surrounding the rescue of the remaining hostages, including Alexander.
