An Orthodox Jewish family from Long Island has initiated a civil lawsuit against Uber, alleging that the ride-sharing giant failed to enforce its own safety protocols designed to protect underage passengers, ultimately enabling circumstances that led to the alleged sexual assault of their 16-year-old daughter. The case, reported by The New York Post, has raised serious questions regarding corporate accountability, passenger safety, and the enforcement of existing safeguards within the rapidly expanding gig-economy transportation sector.

According to court filings cited by The New York Post, the incident occurred in March when the teenager reportedly departed her Nassau County residence and entered a vehicle operated under the Uber platform. The ride, the lawsuit contends, had been arranged by an adult male with whom the minor had been communicating via social media for several months. Despite explicit company policies prohibiting individuals under the age of 18 from traveling alone—unless utilizing a designated “teen account” feature—the driver allegedly failed to verify the girl’s age or refuse service.

The complaint further asserts that the driver transported the minor to Brooklyn without taking reasonable steps to confirm her safety upon arrival or ensuring that she was received by a responsible adult. These alleged lapses, the family argues, constitute a fundamental breach of Uber’s own stated safety standards.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 26-year-old Ralfy Figueroa, who, according to prosecutors, had cultivated an online relationship with the teenager over an extended period. Prosecutors further allege that Figueroa issued threats against the victim and her family should she refuse to meet him. Upon her arrival, he is accused of sexually assaulting the minor and recording the incident, compounding the severity of the alleged offense.

Court documents reviewed by The New York Post indicate that the suspect subsequently arranged for another Uber ride to return the teenager home, though that trip was allegedly canceled after she entered the vehicle, leaving her in a vulnerable position. The lawsuit characterizes these events as the foreseeable consequence of systemic negligence, arguing that Uber failed to implement and enforce mechanisms intended to prevent precisely such scenarios.

Prosecutors have also disclosed that he had previously been enrolled in an alternative-to-incarceration program related to a narcotics case, an arrangement that may now be subject to revocation in light of the new charges.

The emotional toll on the victim has been described as profound. Her family, speaking through legal filings cited by The New York Post, stated that she has endured severe psychological trauma and is currently receiving specialized treatment at an out-of-state mental health facility. The case underscores the enduring consequences of such incidents, extending far beyond the immediate circumstances.

In response to the allegations, Uber issued a statement characterizing the situation as “incredibly distressing.”
