20-year-old former New Jersey resident, Laor Abramov, has been thrust into the heart of a horrifying conflict. His family’s last contact with him was a harrowing phone call in which he described seeking refuge in an Israeli bomb shelter during a party that turned into a scene of chaos, as was reported by the New York Post.
Abramov’s aunt, Yael Abramov, shared the chilling details with The Post, recounting the moments leading up to their communication blackout. The Post report indicated that Laor phoned his father early in the morning, around 7:30, informing him that they were under attack and taking shelter in a bomb shelter. He assured his family that he was safe but couldn’t speak further due to the commotion.
“‘I am going into a missile shelter, a bomb shelter, and don’t worry,’” the aspiring DJ told his family. “‘I’m not going to be able to speak because it’s very noisy.’ After that, we didn’t know anything that was going on.
What followed was hours of anxiety and uncertainty, with no way to reach Laor. The family could only rely on the fragmented accounts of the horrors unfolding in Israel, as was indicated in the Post report.
The first glimmer of hope came when a relative stumbled upon a photograph showing Laor inside the shelter. Standing tall at 6-foot-4, he was recognizable among the partygoers who found themselves caught in the gunfire. The Post reported that Yael said, “I saw that photo and I was just filled with hope that he’s somewhere safe. Then I just found out it’s basically a death trap, those shelters.”
The tragedy that unfolded was described by a survivor from the shelter, a woman now hospitalized and recovering from the trauma. She recounted the terrifying moments when terrorists threatened the shelter with hand grenades, opening fire on the people inside, according to the Post report, “Whoever was still on their feet standing, they grabbed them and put them on their pickup truck and drove away,” she recalled.
The woman’s account included mention of Laor’s presence in the shelter, further deepening the family’s concern for his safety.
The surprise attack by armed terrorists from the Gaza Strip left more than 1,000 Israelis dead, including women, children, and the elderly. At least 150 Israelis, both civilians and soldiers, were taken hostage in the onslaught.
Laor’s family clings to the hope that he survived being taken from the bomb shelter shortly after the attack. As was indicated in the Post report, his mother, a U.S. citizen residing in New Jersey, saw her son return to Israel to serve in the military, driven by his dream of becoming a DJ, just like his father, David Abramov, who had already established himself in the industry.
Laor Abramov was not working at the rave party but was attending as a guest when the festivities turned into a nightmarish ordeal, orchestrated by armed Hamas terrorists, as was noted in the Post report. His family is now part of a broader narrative of horror in Israel, where the feeling of safety has been profoundly shaken.
Laor’s aunt, Yael Abramov, expressed frustration about the situation and questioned the response of the international community. “And where is Biden?” she asked, as was reported by the Post. “Why aren’t the Americans taking care of their own citizens? This is the child of an American.”
