Adwar & Breslauer Families Donote Torah Scroll in Memory of Samuel Adwar, zt’l

Congregation Ohav Sholom of Merrick, Long Island held an extraordinary event on Sunday, November 7th, 2021 which marked the completion and dedication of a new Torah Scroll. A Torah Scroll is a handwritten copy of the Hebrew Bible, tenuously and meticulously copied by a Sofer (Jewish scribe) using a quill on to a cowhide. The event included a scribe completing the final 100 letters of the Torah Scroll, a parade through the streets of Merrick, and a Seudas Mitzvah (celebratory lunch) as well as eloquent remarks delivered by prominent personalities. The dedication of the Torah Scroll and the Hachnassat Sefer Torah festivities were generously sponsored by the Adwar and Breslauer families, in memory of Samuel Adwar, zt’l, the patriarch of their family and longtime Merrick resident, who was niftar in June of 2020.
The event was a tremendous success, with nearly 200 participants, both from the extended Adwar family as well as from the Ohav Sholom community in Merrick. After the completion of the Torah, there were several tributes, including one from Rabbi Ira Ebbin, the spiritual leader of Ohav Sholom, who shared, “Every Shabbat, when we will read from the Adwar Torah, we will think of Sammy’s love for Judaism, love for Ohav Sholom and love for all Jewish people. Every time we read from this Torah I will think of his beautiful smile, and the he pure joy he had when would hear the Torah Reading…And I will smile just like he always smiled when he was in shul.”
The parade was lead by a truck ordained by an oversized Torah crown, blasting upbeat Jewish music as well as classical Yemenite Jewish songs, in celebration of the Yemenite culture that Mr. Adwar cherished deeply.
