In a move that has drawn fierce backlash from Jewish leaders and former Biden administration officials, President Donald Trump has dismissed multiple Biden-era appointees from the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, including Doug Emhoff, husband of former Vice President Kamala Harris and the highest-ranking Jewish official in the previous administration. The firings, reported by The Associated Press (AP), are part of a broader campaign by Trump to purge Biden-era figures from federal advisory and ceremonial boards — a practice that has sparked growing concerns over the politicization of traditionally apolitical institutions.

Emhoff, who played a leading role in the Biden administration’s National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism, issued a strongly worded statement denouncing his removal, emphasizing that Holocaust remembrance must remain above the partisan fray.

“Let me be clear: Holocaust remembrance and education should never be politicized,” Emhoff said, according to The Associated Press. “To turn one of the worst atrocities in history into a wedge issue is dangerous — and it dishonors the memory of six million Jews murdered by Nazis that this museum was created to preserve.”

Emhoff’s removal is especially symbolic given his high-profile role as the first Jewish spouse of a Vice President and his leadership in elevating Jewish communal concerns during the Biden administration. As second gentleman, Emhoff was a vocal and active participant in efforts to combat the rise in antisemitic hate crimes and to strengthen Jewish historical education in public institutions, including the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

His role was not ceremonial. Under the Biden administration, Emhoff helped drive the implementation of the first-ever national strategy dedicated to fighting antisemitism, an interagency initiative that sought to unify public, private, and educational responses to surging antisemitic incidents in the United States.

The Associated Press reported that other prominent Biden administration alumni removed alongside Emhoff include Ron Klain, former White House Chief of Staff, and Susan Rice, who served as domestic policy adviser and was the principal author of the 2023 antisemitism strategy. Rice, in particular, was widely credited with transforming a previously fragmented government response into a more unified and actionable agenda.

The dismissals are part of a larger pattern of political reshuffling that has defined Trump’s second term since his return to the White House in January. The AP report noted that Trump has made it a priority to remove holdovers from the Biden administration across a variety of federal boards, including advisory councils that had traditionally been considered nonpartisan or bipartisan in spirit.

While former President Joe Biden also removed Trump appointees upon taking office in 2021 — most notably 18 members from military service academy boards — those dismissals were more limited in scope. The scale and breadth of Trump’s current removals has prompted concern from observers who worry that institutions meant to transcend politics, such as the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, are becoming instruments of ideological loyalty.

The White House has not yet issued an official comment on the dismissals, according to The Associated Press.

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council oversees the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, which serves as the nation’s official living memorial to the Holocaust and promotes education, remembrance, and the prevention of genocide. The council’s membership typically includes bipartisan representation from government, academia, and the Jewish community, reflecting a shared commitment to memory and education over politics.
