(A7) The Justice Department has asked former Vice President Mike Pence to testify in its probe of the events surrounding the January 6 Capitol riots.

The DOJ plans to question Pence about former President Trump’s role in the January 6 riots and efforts by him and his inner circle to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, the New York Times reported.

According to ABC News, sources said Pence is considering whether to testify.

The DOJ’s investigation is separate from the investigation being run by the House Jan 6 Committee for which Pence has on multiple occasions declined to testify.

Several months ago, reports surfaced that the DOJ was looking into Trump as a crucial aspect of its overall investigation into efforts to overturn the election leading to the Capitol riots. Witnesses have reported been asked by the DOJ about meeting Trump in December 2020 and January 2021 to speak of ways to alter the election results in his favor. They have also been queried about Trump pressuring Pence to participate in the scheme.

DOJ officials first contacted Pence’s office weeks ago, the report said. Talks have been ongoing about when the former vice president would testify and what form it would take. If he does agree, it could be months before anything takes place, according to the Washington Examiner.

Pence’s testimony could potentially prove a problem for Trump’s run at the White House in 2024.
