A suspect knocked a woman to the ground on a New York City subway platform in an alleged rape attempt in broad daylight on Saturday, according to NYPD News and reported by The NY Post

The woman was waiting for the Q train on the platform on Saturday around 11 a.m. inside the Lexington Avenue and East 63rd Street station when the suspect approached her, the New York Post reported.

On Sunday, Jose Reyes, 31, of the Bronx was arrested for the attempted rape on the Upper East Side subway platform. Thanks to the quick thinking of fellow subway riders and died-in-the-wool New Yorkers, the attack was not only filmed for the purposes of apprehending the suspect but the crowd that gathered was able to thwart the attacker.

The victim of the shocking assault was a 25-year-old woman. “This heinous and horrendous act was interrupted by a good Samaritan who observed Mr. Reyes’ behavior and got him to cease . . . while subsequently videotaping the incident,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison told reporters.

According to the NY Post, the woman was riding the F train home from work when she encountered Reyes, who was “smoking some type of hookah and started making weird noises and laughing to himself,” Harrison said.

An NYPD detective told the Post that the woman and the attacker got off at the station, where he began gesturing “in a masturbation motion toward her” as she tried to move away.

In the videotape taken by the witness on the subway platform, the man shown attacking the victim was identified by cops as Reyes. According to the NY Post report, Reyes was thrusting his body on top of the woman as horrified bystanders looked on.

“Hey, get off her!” people yelled, according to cops.

The video also shows the suspect taking off after grabbing his sunglasses and mouthing inaudible worlds.

As was previously reported in the Jewish Voice, crime in New York City has seen dramatic spikes in the last few months.

On August 28th, the Jewish Voice reported that police were looking for a man who allegedly beat and tried to sexually assault a woman on a Brooklyn sidewalk last week.
