Real estate agent Cottie Maxwell, who is known for her involvement in property transactions in a specific Long Island village associated with Billy Joel, has witnessed the transformation of Centre Island over the years. Once a hub for notable figures like Billy Joel, Rupert Murdoch, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie, Centre Island has evolved into an exclusive, secluded community that prioritizes privacy and security.
The New York Post reported on this interesting real estate story.
Centre Island, located within the North Shore town of Oyster Bay, is characterized by its tranquil atmosphere and absence of commercial establishments such as gas stations, grocery stores, and post offices. Instead, it comprises elegant residences with picturesque views of Oyster Bay Harbor and Cold Spring Harbor. This intentional seclusion has attracted celebrities, granting them a sense of refuge.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a significant surge in real estate activity within Centre Island. More than 50 homes have changed ownership since January 2020, with an additional 9 homes currently listed for sale. One particular property, a new-construction build spanning 7,500 square feet, has been on the market since July 2020, priced at $6.25 million.
Billy Joel, a long-time resident of Centre Island, had originally intended to expand his property to include a horse farm. Despite these plans, he decided to list his decades-long compound, known as Middlesea, for a staggering $49 million. This expansive estate features over 20,000 square feet of living space and approximately 2,000 feet of water frontage.
The trend of Centre Island residents relocating to Florida has been a driving force behind the recent flurry of real estate transactions. Even Billy Joel, who owns multiple properties in Florida, has chosen to sell his Centre Island estate. This migration is attributed to factors like better weather, cost savings, and an opportunity for a quieter lifestyle.
Maxwell, who has been closely associated with Centre Island’s real estate landscape, sees the village as an appealing alternative to the Hamptons. She suggests that those seeking a more serene environment without the need to venture too far could find Centre Island an attractive option. While residents need to drive to the nearby town of Bayville for errands, the village’s unique ambiance and security continue to be its hallmark.
As Centre Island experiences a generational shift in its population, locals harbor no resentment towards departing residents like Billy Joel. Instead, there’s a sense of appreciation for the positive impact these notable figures have had on the community. While change is inevitable, the sentiment of missing those who leave remains strong, underscoring the deep connections that have been forged over the years.
