The head of Wegman’s privately owned grocery chain signed a long-term deal for the space at 1932 Broadway between West 64th and 65th streets in Manhattan’s Lincoln Square area. As reported by The NY Post, the deal signed last week, for the space formerly occupied by Bed Bath & Beyond, may or may not be used for the company’s typical upscale food market. The space might be utilized for a totally different concept store.
Wegman’s grocery chain already opened its long-awaited new downtown Manhattan store in October 2023, and was greeted with eager patrons lining up outside in the early-morning hours to be the first to shop at the Astor Place market. First announced in 2021, this was the company’s first Manhattan store, opened at 770 Broadway, at the site of a former Kmart. Some four years ago, Wegmans also opened its store in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Founded in 1916 by brothers Walter and John Wegman in upstate Rochester, New York, the company boasts about 109 stores in eight states along the east coast, including NY, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, Virginia, North Carolina, Delaware and the District of Columbia, as of 2022. The company does about $12 billion in revenue annually. The privately-held company has been listed on the top four of Forbes’ “100 Best Companies to Work For” list since 2016. Wegman’s chains boast over 53,000 employees in all.
In 2023 the company announced plans to add seven new stores, including an expansion into the state of Connecticut.
The company is currently led by Danny Wegman, a third-generation chairman for Wegman. Colleen Wegman, who is a fourth generation, serves as president and CEO, and Nicole Wegman, also fourth generation, is the president of Wegmans Brand.
