Teen Knicks Fan Beaten Into Coma After ‘Spurs in 7’ Taunt Sparks Violent Midtown Brawl

(Jewish Voice News) A 17-year-old Knicks fan is recovering after being brutally assaulted during a chaotic street fight near Madison Square Garden following Game 4 of the NBA Finals, according to reporting by the New York Post and law enforcement sources. The attack happened late Wednesday night as thousands of fans celebrated the Knicks’ dramatic victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

What Happened Outside Madison Square Garden?

According to the New York Post, the violence erupted around 11:45 p.m. near West 35th Street and Eighth Avenue, just blocks from Madison Square Garden. A group gathered outside the arena following the Knicks’ comeback win when a man allegedly began taunting fans by shouting “Spurs in 7.”

Sources told the Post that the comment quickly triggered a heated verbal exchange between rival fans. The situation escalated into a large brawl, with multiple people allegedly joining the fight.

Teen Was Not the Original Target

The victim, identified by the New York Post as 17-year-old Johnny Aumuller, was reportedly standing with a group of Knicks supporters when the confrontation began. According to sources cited by the Post, he was not the person involved in the initial argument. However, he became caught up in the melee and was allegedly singled out during the violence.

Law enforcement sources told the Post that the teenager was repeatedly attacked before being thrown to the ground. Authorities say he suffered severe head and body injuries during the assault.

Victim Suffers Seizure and Falls Into Coma

Police said the teenager suffered a seizure following the attack and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. According to both the New York Post and local law enforcement, he later fell into a coma.

There has since been some encouraging news. The Post reported that the victim emerged from the coma and was listed in critical but stable condition. His mother told the newspaper that doctors expected to remove him from a ventilator as his condition improved.

Livestream Video Captured the Incident

The confrontation was reportedly captured during a livestream, drawing widespread attention online. Investigators have reviewed video footage and are working to identify all individuals involved. Authorities released surveillance images of at least one suspect and have asked the public for assistance.

As of Friday, no arrests had been announced. The NYPD continues to investigate the incident as a serious assault.

Growing Concerns Over NBA Finals Crowd Violence

The assault comes amid several incidents of disorder linked to Knicks Finals watch parties and celebrations across New York City. Police have made dozens of arrests during recent Finals-related gatherings, raising concerns about crowd safety as the championship series continues.

The New York Post reported that the victim’s mother now plans to keep her son away from future games and large public celebrations once he is released from the hospital.
