NYC’s public schools have seen an increase in gun seizures, while simultaneously city’s school safety agent force has plunged by 25 percent in recent years.
In general, across America there has been a shortage of labor. A record 4.3 million workers in America quit their jobs in August. This phenomenon has been deemed the Great Resignation”
Anthony Klotz, a psychologist at Texas A&M University, explained the “Great Resignation”
” During the pandemic, because there was a lot of death and illness and lockdowns, we really had the time and the motivation to sit back and say, do I like the trajectory of my life? Am I pursuing a life that brings me well-being?”, Klotz explained on NPR.
The 19 months of extended unemployment gave individuals who were furloughed an opportunity to reevaluate their careers. Many did not return to their jobs when the lock-down orders eased up.
“So you figure millions of Americans get to work from home, and as human beings, the need for autonomy is one of our fundamental human needs, and we don’t tend to give it up once we’re given some personal freedom. So I figured there’d be a number of people who would quit rather than go back to the office”, Klotz added.
School Safety officers are one of the many professions hit hard by the phenomenon which developed as a result of COVID lock downs, and a recent brawl at a Staten Island High School resulting in a bloodied-up dean, left politicians in the borough wondering if the COVID vaccination requirements are resulting in layoffs and walk offs. The NY Post pointed out, roughly 400 school safety agents have been removed from payroll for not complying with the mandate.
The NY Post reported:
Amid an alarming surge in student gun seizures, officials revealed Monday that the city’s school safety agent force has plunged by 25 percent in recent years.
Speaking at Mayor Bill de Blasio’s daily briefing, NYPD Chief of Department Rodney Harrison. said their ranks have eroded from a high of 5,000 to just 3,200 currently, a drop of 37 percent.
But the Department of Education and safety agent union chief Greg Floyd later clarified that their numbers have dropped from 5,500 in 2018 to roughly 4,100 currently — a decrease of 25 percent.
There have been proposals to hire an additional 475 agents, however, “woke” leadership such as Councilman Mark Treyger, are calling for hiring more guidance counselors and social workers in schools. while anti police CRT influenced advocacy groups are demanding the NYPD end all affiliation with public school security.
NY Post reported:
Harrison said Monday that 250 additional agents will augment the current force in November — the first new agents since 2019.
School safety agent union chief Greg Floyd juxtaposed the public embrace of school safety agents at Monday’s press conference with City Hall’s concurrent policy pursuits.
