(TJV) Former US President and 2024 Republican frontrunner, Donald Trump, has been indicted on federal felony charges related to the Jan. 6 Capitol breach in Washington, D.C., as part of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation.
The charges include conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
In response to the felony charges, Trump’s campaign team made a statement comparing the indictment to persecution in Nazi Germany, which drew significant attention from Israeli media outlets who covered the story.
“The lawlessness of these persecutions of President Trump and his supporters is reminiscent of Nazi Germany in the 1930s, the former Soviet Union, and other authoritarian, dictatorial regimes,” the campaign said in a statement.
The CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, Jonathan Greenblatt, criticized the comparison, stating that it was factually incorrect, inappropriate, and offensive.
The 45-page indictment accuses Trump of spreading false claims about election fraud following the 2020 election, despite knowing that they were untrue. The intention behind these actions, as alleged by Special Counsel Jack Smith, was to create a false appearance of legitimacy for his claims, sow mistrust and anger among the public, and erode faith in the election’s administration.
Trump has been ordered to appear in federal court in Washington for his arraignment on Thursday, Aug. 3, at 4 p.m.
