McCarthy Tells RJC that Ilhan Omar Will Be Ousted from House Foreign Relations Committee Due to Anti-Semitic Remarks

Speaking to an audience of Jewish supporters of the Republican party on Saturday, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) who many believe will become the next speaker of the House of Representatives now that Nancy Pelosi has announced that she will not seek a leadership role within her party, has said that one of this chief priorities is to have Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) removed from her position on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, due to her visceral animus towards Israel and her many anti-Semitic comments, according to a Fox News report.
He also hinted that her personal criticism of him last year was a factor as well, as was reported by the JTA.
“We watch anti-Semitism grow, not just on our campuses, but we watched it grow In the halls of Congress,” he said at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s 2022 leadership meeting in Las Vegas, as was reported by Fox News.
“I promised you last year that as speaker she will no longer be on Foreign Affairs, and I’m keeping that promise,” he said to cheers from the audience in Las Vegas.
McCarthy, a California Republican whose party just won a narrow majority in the House, was speaking Saturday to the annual Republican Jewish Coalition conference in Las Vegas, according to the JTA report.
“I remember what she said about me,” he said, as was reported by the JTA. “I remember what she said about Israel. I remember what she said about the U.S.-Israel relationship,” he said. “I remembered it so much, I promised you last year she would no longer be on foreign affairs. I’m keeping that promise.” His remarks were met with thunderous applause.
Fox News reported that since being elected to Congress in 2018, Omar has made several controversial comments widely deemed to perpetuate anti-Semitic tropes, including saying it was “all about the Benjamins” for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and tweeting, “We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban,” which was seen as equating Israel and the U.S. to the Taliban. She has also announced her support for the Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions movement that seeks to isolate Israel.
Last year, Omar called McCarthy “a liar and a coward” after he refused to discipline a Republican congresswoman, Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert, for calling her a member of a “jihad squad” and joking that she feared Omar, a Somali American Muslim, carried a bomb, as was reported by the JTA.
Fox News also reported that in a tweet before joining Congress, Omar claimed Israel had “hypnotized the world” and after being elected she submitted a resolution to the House comparing boycotting Israel to boycotting the Nazis.
McCarthy also condemned remarks made by Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., last year when she said, “Vaccinated employees get a vaccination logo just like the Nazi’s forced Jewish people to wear a gold star,” which was seen as minimizing the Holocaust, as was reported by Fox News.
In January 2020, the FBI launched an investigation to determine whether Omar married her own brother in order to ease his immigration to the U.S., the New York Post reported.
While Omar has consistently denied that she has married her brother, a person close to the matter produced a trove of documents to the FBI relating to the 2009 marriage of Omar and Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
Many bloggers have posited that Elmi, a British citizen, is Omar’s brother based on a years-old Instagram post that identified him as the “uncle” of Omar’s child, according to a report on the National Review. The FBI agents looked into the possibility that Omar married Elmi in order to obtain a Green Card for the brother.
