Elon Musk publicly challenged Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt’s comments at the World Economic Forum about what is driving antisemitism in Europe, by citing US antisemitism envoy Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun’s assessment, VINnews reports.

The disagreement traces to a Davos discussion on antisemitism, extremism, and social cohesion where Goldschmidt, president of the Conference of European Rabbis, appeared alongside Muhammad bin Abdul Karim Al-Issa.

In that session, Goldschmidt presented antisemitism as a problem with several simultaneous sources. He pointed to threats associated with the far right, the far left, and radical Islam, while cautioning against casting Muslim communities as the main engine behind current antisemitic activity.

He also tied the subject to the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack in Israel and argued that integration and sustained interfaith engagement remain important tools for confronting hatred.

Kaploun later rejected what he viewed as an incomplete framing, saying that mass migration has been a major factor behind the recent rise in antisemitic incidents across Europe.

He argued that treating migration as peripheral ignores immediate security conditions facing Jewish communities.

Musk then entered the debate online, stating that he agreed with Kaploun’s assessment and thanking him for speaking out.

Goldschmidt answered online a few hours later, saying his Davos remarks were being presented inaccurately.

He said he did not blame “old Europe” for the growth of antisemitism and said his comments had included explicit reference to jihadist violence.

At the same time, he reiterated his central argument that antisemitism cannot be reduced to a single explanation, maintaining that multiple ideological currents are involved.

The back-and-forth highlighted a widening split among Jewish leaders and policymakers over how to characterize the causes of the current global antisemitism crisis.
