Fox News has reported that on Tuesday, an investigative journalist posted videos on Twitter that show officials from Disney asking their employees to pushback against the Florida initiated parental rights bill, HB 1557. The bill was recently signed into law by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, which protects young children from being taught about gay and transgender issues in schools.
The political firestorm gained stream when the bill was mentioned in a disparaging manner by Hollywood liberal elite actors at the 94th Academy Awards on Sunday evening.
Fox News reported that the videos posted on Tuesday came from journalist Christopher F. Rufo. The videos show high ranking Disney officials speaking to employees at what appears to be a virtual group meeting which concerned the Florida parental rights bill. Employees were asked to immediately implement an openly gay agenda in their new animation projects and in Disney World parks across the globe.

The New York Post reported that the virtual call was part of Disney’s “Reimagine Tomorrow” campaign, according to the video posted on Twitter Tuesday. Its website promises that 50 percent of regular and recurring characters across the Disney universe will come from “underrepresented groups.”
One of videos shows a production person speaking of how Disney was incredibly welcoming to her in terms of introducing gay and transgendered characters into animation films and programs geared for young children and how the company actually encouraged her input.
Fox News reported that in another video, Disney’s Diversity and Inclusion Manager Vivian Ware explains to employees that the company is “ditching the words ladies, gentlemen, boys, and girls in its theme parks in order to not alienate transgender children.” They are now going to use such gender-neutral greetings as “welcome everyone.”

Moreover, the videos indicated that Disney has plans to introduce a significant number of characters who are gender nonconforming.
Karey Burke, Disney’s corporate president said in another video that she would like to see at least 50% of Disney’s characters in the future identify as LGBT or a racial minority, according to the Fox News report. She also mentioned that she has two children; one of whom identifies as transgender while the other is pansexual.
The Post also reported that Burke said she supports featuring “many, many” characters who are LGBTQIA, which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (or questioning), intersex, and asexual (or allies).
She also said that she was surprised to discover from a colleague that the company that she represents only had a “handful” of queer lead characters in its content, according to the Post report.
“And I went, ‘What? That can’t be true,’” Burke said. “And I realized it actually is true. We have many, many, many LGBTQIA characters in our stories and yet we don’t have enough leads and narratives in which gay characters just get to be characters and not have to be about gay stories.”
Another video posted shows an LGBT activist accusing DeSantis and his press secretary Christina Pushaw of trying to “erase” LGBT employees at Disney.
The videos were presented on social media a week after some employees of Disney made the decision to walk off their jobs to protest what they perceived as a Disney’s silence in the face of the passage of Florida’s parental rights bill. Fox News reported that the bill “prohibits teachers from providing instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade classrooms. “
The group of employees at Disney who walked off the job posted on social media, “TWDC must publicly commit to an actionable plan that protects employees from hateful legislation.”
The employees group said that Disney’s actionable plan should reflect “commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community by stopping construction and investment in the state of Florida until hateful legislation is repealed” as well as “stopping any efforts to move employees to Florida office locations, ensuring employee safety and employment retention. Guaranteeing no employee will be terminated when denying relocation to FL,” as was reported by Fox News.
When the hot potato bill was first being debated in the Florida legislature, Bob Chapek, the Disney CEO did not take a public position as representative of Disney, however when backlash to his silence began to grow, Chapek felt the heat and came out with a statement.
Chapek issued an apology to the opponents of the bill and promised that Disney would donate millions of dollars to gay and transgender causes and organizations.
Subsequent to the signing the parental rights bill on Monday, Disney released a statement condemning the move.
“Florida’s HB 1557, also known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, should never have passed and should never have been signed into law. Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that. We are dedicated to standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family, as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and across the country, “ the statement read.
Fox News reported that “the seven-page bill does not ban the word “gay” in school settings and does not ban casual discussions of topics relating to sexual orientation and gender identity in the classroom but has nonetheless been referred to as the “Don’t Say Gay Bill” by numerous media outlets and Democrat politicians.”
In response to Disney opposition to the HB 1557, Florida governor Ron DeSantis said at a press conference on Tuesday: “For Disney to come out and put a statement and say that the bill should have never passed and that they are going to actively work to repeal it, I think, one, was fundamentally dishonest, but, two, I think that crossed the line.”
DeSantis added, “This state is governed by the interests of the people of the state of Florida. It is not based on the demands of California corporate executives. They do not run this state. They do not control this state.”
