(TJV) In a recent CNN poll, President Biden received disheartening news as his approval rating stands at just 39 percent, more than a year ahead of the upcoming election.

The survey indicates that a substantial 61 percent of respondents disapprove of his job performance, marking a decline from his earlier 45 percent approval rating at the beginning of the year, Politico noted this poll.

Furthermore, the poll shockingly showed  South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, among GOP presidential candidates, leads in a hypothetical matchup against Biden. Haley secures 49 percent of the support, while Biden lags at 43 percent. Other prominent Republican contenders are closely tied with the president.

These results provide a boost for Haley, a former United Nations ambassador during the Trump administration. While she still trails behind Trump in primary voter polls, this outcome suggests she might be a stronger contender against Biden in the general election. This could be a pivotal talking point as she campaigns in early primary and caucus states like Iowa and New Hampshire.

A couple of other GOP candidates also edge out Biden in head-to-head polling. Former Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Tim Scott each garner 46 percent support, surpassing Biden’s 44 percent. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie secures 44 percent to Biden’s 42 percent, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ties with Biden, both at 47 percent. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy trails Biden with 45 percent compared to Biden’s 46 percent, and Trump holds a slight 1-point advantage at 47 percent to 46 percent in a potential rematch.

When asked about a hypothetical rematch between Trump and Biden, 47 percent of respondents favor the former president, while 46 percent prefer the current president. A small percentage of 5 percent would choose a different candidate, and 2 percent do not plan to vote. Overall, these figures paint a challenging picture for Biden, who trails five out of the seven GOP candidates in the poll.

One significant concern for voters appears to be Biden’s age; he is currently 80 and will turn 81 in November. Over half of the polled Democratic voters express serious concerns about his age, with approximately 60 percent worried about his ability to win the 2024 election if he secures the Democratic nomination. An even more substantial portion, 62 percent of Democrats and 76 percent of all respondents, express serious concerns about Biden completing a second term.

Despite these concerns, Biden is the likely Democratic nominee, with his main primary challengers, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson, lacking party support and trailing significantly in polls. However, this poll’s findings are likely to heighten Democratic anxieties about Biden’s candidacy in the upcoming election.

The survey also reveals that 46 percent of voters believe that any Republican presidential nominee would be a better choice than Biden, while 32 percent favor the sitting president over any of the GOP hopefuls. On the flip side, 44 percent think any Democratic nominee would be superior to Trump, while 38 percent prefer the former president over any Democratic contender.

Among Democrats, the poll finds that 67 percent would like to see a different candidate nominated, a significant increase from the 54 percent who expressed the same sentiment in March. Notably, 82 percent of those seeking an alternative candidate do not have a specific person in mind, while only 1 percent would vote for either of Biden’s 2024 Democratic challengers, Williamson or Kennedy Jr.

The poll, conducted by SSRS from August 25 to 31, involved 1,259 registered voters and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
