Cantor Fitzgerald’s Howard Lutnick Hosts High Stakes Fundraiser for Trump in The Hamptons
Edited by: Fern Sidman
On Friday, the normally serene Hamptons transformed into a hub of political and logistical upheaval as former President Donald Trump held a high-profile fundraiser that brought local traffic to a grinding halt. According to a report on Saturday in The Daily Beast, the hedge fund managers and financial moguls, who had previously kept their distance, opened their coffers in a show of support for the GOP presidential nominee, signaling a significant shift in their political allegiances.
The event, co-hosted by Howard Lutnick of Cantor Fitzgerald, sought to amass $10 million for Trump’s campaign, according to Bloomberg. As per the information provided in The Daily Beast report, the fundraising spectacle drew a star-studded lineup of cohosts, including Omeed Malik, CEO of Farvahar Partners; John Paulson, a long-time Trump supporter and billionaire hedge fund operator; Richard Kurtz, an apartment magnate; Woody Johnson, co-owner of the New York Jets and former U.S. Ambassador to the U.K.; Lee Zeldin, former New York congressman; and Duke Buchan, former hedge fund manager and a fervent Trump fundraiser.
The fundraiser’s exclusivity was marked by its steep entry fees, with the minimum ticket priced at $25,000 per person. For those wishing to gain the coveted status of event host, a staggering $500,000 per couple was required, as was indicated in The Daily Beast report. Such hefty contributions highlight the financial muscle behind Trump’s campaign and the willingness of his affluent backers to invest heavily in his political future.
Among the notable cohosts, Omeed Malik stood out, not only for his financial acumen but also for the controversial circumstances surrounding his departure from Bank of America, where he secured an eight-figure settlement following allegations of sexual harassment, as was reported by The Daily Beast. His involvement in the fundraiser, alongside other high-profile figures, signaled a unified front of influential supporters rallying behind Trump.
Lee Zeldin, who voted to overturn the 2020 election results and later lost the New York gubernatorial race to Kathy Hochul, brought a politically charged presence to the event, as was observed by The Daily Beast. Similarly, Duke Buchan, known for his fundraising prowess and tenure as U.S. Ambassador to Spain, added significant political clout to the gathering.
Trump’s arrival, accompanied by his Secret Service detail, necessitated road closures and caused significant traffic disruptions throughout the Hamptons. According to the East Hampton Star, Southampton Town Police Lieutenant Todd Spencer confirmed that there would be road closures on Friday from approximately 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., affecting key areas including Westhampton Beach, Hampton Bays, Southampton, Shinnecock Hills, North Sea, Water Mill, and Bridgehampton.
The wealthy enclave, accustomed to tranquility, found itself in a state of gridlock, reminiscent of the chaos that ensued during President Biden’s visit in June.
It was then that Biden attended a fundraiser at billionaire Barry Rosenstein’s residence. As was explained in the Page Six report of The New York Post, locals complained about substantial traffic delays, with some attributing over 45-minute increases in travel time between Southampton and East Hampton to Biden’s motorcade. The Page Six report added that a source at the time encapsulated the local sentiment, remarking, “Oy! The rich and famous have their noses all out of joint!”
The renewed financial support for Trump from the Hamptons’ elite reflects broader trends in the political landscape. The substantial funds raised and the high-profile endorsements signify a consolidation of wealthy backers who see Trump as a viable candidate for the GOP, the report in The Daily Beast said. This shift also calls attention to the evolving dynamics within the Republican Party, where financial backing and political influence are becoming increasingly intertwined.
James McCarthy, a prominent communications strategist whose clients include Fortune 500 companies and industry leaders such as Ken Langone, observed a notable change in attitude among his Wall Street clientele. “All my Wall Street clients are either bundling donations now or talking up their networks for roles in the administration,” McCarthy shared with The Daily Beast. This shift marks a significant turnaround from the previous cool reception Trump had received from the financial sector.
Trump’s supporters, who had been hesitant after the events of January 6 and his legal battles, have found new motivation in the wake of an assassination attempt on the former president. When speaking with The Daily Beast, McCarthy noted, “Trump’s defiant reaction to the assassination attempt is the turning point I’m hearing most often” from affluent donors. This defiance has rekindled their admiration and support, turning ambivalence into active engagement. If they were ambivalent six weeks ago, now they’re jockeying for entrée at the Bridgehampton fundraiser tonight,” McCarthy added.
Videos from the event captured enthusiastic supporters along Route 27 near Francis S. Gabreski Airport, waving American, Trump, and even Israeli flags, highlighting the diverse base of his support. The Daily Beast report also said that McCarthy, who owns CounterPoint Strategies and spends summers in the Hamptons, has noticed an increase in pro-Trump signage. “Lots of pro-Trump signage” now dots the landscape south of the highway, extending beyond the year-round working-class communities to the high-end boutiques and manicured hedges of the wealthy enclaves.
The fundraiser in Bridgehampton not only demonstrated Trump’s enduring appeal but also highlighted the complex and dynamic nature of political allegiances in the United States.
