Members of the community revealed that Butler, described as a quiet individual who had been a victim of bullying since elementary school, reached a breaking point when his sister also became a target. Yesenia Roeder, part of a family acquainted with Butler, expressed, “He was hurting. He got tired. He got tired of the bullying. He got tired of the harassment.” She added, “Was it a smart idea to shoot up the school? No. God, no.”

Prior to the violent outburst, Butler posted a cryptic TikTok video in what seemed to be the school bathroom stall, featuring a blue duffle bag with the caption “now we wait.” This chilling prelude was accompanied by the song “Stray Bullet” by KMFDM, notorious for its association with Eric Harris, one of the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre in 1999.

The firearms used in the attack were not definitively linked to Butler, and the incident brought attention to Iowa’s lenient gun regulations, which, as of July 2021, do not mandate a permit for handgun purchase or public firearm carry but require a background check for permitless handgun acquisitions.
While the police withheld the names of the victims, the Easton Valley Community School District confirmed that Dan Marburger, the school’s principal since 1995, was among the survivors. One of the injured individuals is in critical condition, but the injuries of the other four were reported as stable. The attack unfolded on the first day back from winter break, with Butler choosing a time before the official school day commenced, when only a limited number of students and faculty were present in the building. The district expressed condolences, stating, “Our hearts break to hear of this kind of violence that affects so many people, including many in our community.”
