Tump Blasts Supreme Court After Tariff Setback, Calls Majority ‘Disloyal to the Constitution’

President Donald Trump on Friday delivered a scathing rebuke of the Supreme Court after it struck down most of his tariff policy in a 6-3 decision, calling the ruling “deeply disappointing” and accusing the majority of betraying the country. As NBC reported, the president described the justices who sided against him as a “disgrace to our nation” and said their decision was “very unpatriotic and disloyal to the Constitution.”

Speaking at the White House, Trump sharply criticized the majority while praising the three dissenting justices. According to NBC, the ruling invalidated the bulk of the tariffs that had been a central pillar of his trade agenda. Although the court holds a 6-3 conservative majority that has often ruled in his favor, this decision marked a significant legal setback.

Trump suggested the justices in the majority had been improperly influenced, claiming — without offering evidence — that they may have been “swayed by foreign interests.” NBC reported that he alleged outside forces exert “undue influence” over the court, speculating whether that influence came “through fear or respect or friendships.”

While presidents frequently express disagreement with Supreme Court decisions, NBC noted that Trump’s remarks stood out for their intensity and personal tone. He refrained from naming the justices who ruled against him but harshly criticized them collectively. Two members of the majority — Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett — were appointed by Trump himself and have often sided with him in prior cases.

In contrast, Trump openly commended the three dissenters: Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Brett Kavanaugh. As NBC reported, he singled out Kavanaugh, another of his appointees, saying, “I’m so proud of him.”

The president also addressed the possibility that members of the court may attend his upcoming State of the Union address, scheduled for Tuesday. NBC reported that Trump brushed aside the prospect of seeing the justices in person, saying, “I couldn’t care less if they come.” During the same appearance, he announced plans to impose new tariffs to replace those struck down by the court.

Pressed by reporters about the votes cast by Barrett and Gorsuch, Trump was blunt. “I think their decision was terrible,” he said, adding that it was “an embarrassment to their families,” according to NBC.

The decision represents a notable check on presidential authority over trade policy and could add further tension between the executive branch and the judiciary. As NBC reported, the ruling raises questions about how the administration will reshape its trade strategy in the wake of the court’s intervention — and how the issue may factor into Trump’s State of the Union address next week.
