(TJV NEWS) Doron Steinbrecher, released from Hamas captivity in January as part of the most recent Gaza ceasefire, publicly expressed doubt over whether the return of hostages remains Israel’s top priority, the Times of Israel reported.

Speaking to thousands gathered at Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, Steinbrecher recalled moments from her captivity and said she clung to signs of hope. “I tried to believe it when my tunnel was bombed and I was smuggled into the streets of Gaza, I tried to believe it when I heard military choppers flying overhead,” she told the rally. According to the Times of Israel, demonstrators also displayed a large banner addressed to U.S. President Donald Trump that read: “All 48 hostages home now.”

Steinbrecher said hostages were encouraged by statements from leaders but were left uncertain. “You want to believe it when you hear the prime minister address you directly via loudspeakers,” she said, referencing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial decision to broadcast his UN address on trucks in Gaza. “You want to believe it when you hear Trump’s threats and promises again and again. You want to believe it when you hear that [White House Mideast envoy Steve] Witkoff is optimistic,” she added, according to the Times of Israel.

The former hostage described the psychological toll of captivity, saying she held onto “every date, every memory, every occasion” to keep from giving up. “But I don’t know if they still believe — I don’t know if I still believe — that everything is being done,” she said. “But I have no choice but to believe they’ll come back. We have no choice, and neither do they.”

Steinbrecher also raised concerns about the current military campaign in Gaza. The Times of Israel quoted her warning that amid the operation to take over Gaza City, “it’s unclear that there will be any living hostages left, unclear that it will be possible to locate the dead. Soldiers will keep getting killed and injured mentally and physically… [and] the country will keep being at war and not begin its rehabilitation.”

Marking the passing of holidays without the hostages’ return, she asked, “That doesn’t bother decision-makers? I want to believe that everything is being done to bring them home, that it’s the top priority.”

“If there is an opportunity” for a new hostage-ceasefire deal, Steinbrecher urged, “don’t miss out on that hope. Save them, us.”

  1. October 7 is unspeakable. But we must because there are so many folk who will the government of Israel; are willing to force the government of Israel to pay any price to retrieve their family and friends from Hamas.

What has Hamas said publicly about repeating October 7?

What has Hamas said publicly regarding their formal plans for the people of Israel.

    Not doing enough?

  2. I understand her feelings, but do not agree with her opinion that the hostages should be Israel’s “top priority”. And anything from anti-Israel seditious TOI is not to be trusted. (We could do without the music accompanying the video.)

  3. Top priority should be utter destruction of Hamas… victory! Besides, everyone would benefit from a nice parking lot that used to be called Gaza.
