( i24) Leaders of the Israeli protest movement calling for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to step down stated they intended to petition the Supreme Court should police continue its use of water cannons to disperse demonstrators.
Attorney and protest organizer Gonen Ben Yitzhak stated in a statement circulated on social media that this pacification method is far from harmless.
“Police have used water cannons, blasting high-pressured water at protesters. This represents unwarranted and disproportionate use of force that endangers the demonstrators and has caused some severe injuries, including head wounds and injuries to internal organs.”
The protests, organized to denounce the government’s handling of Israel’s resurgent coronavirus outbreak, in addition to the premier’s numerous corruption indictments, have become a near-daily occurrence for over the past week.
Netanyahu, who denies any wrongdoing, was indicted for accepting improper gifts and seeking to trade favors with local media moguls in exchange for positive coverage.
According to a July 12 poll by the Israel Democracy Institute think tank, only 29.5 percent of the public approved of Netanyahu’s coronavirus management.
He has admitted he reopened the economy too soon through in late April and early May, when Israel had reduced its daily caseload to a trickle.
