(TJV NEWS) A new systematic review published in Environmental International has found with “high certainty” that radiation from cellphones and other wireless devices causes cancer in animals. Conducted as part of a broader World Health Organization (WHO) investigation, the meta-study analyzed data from over 50 previously published studies on radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF).

According to the findings, RF-EMF exposure is linked to two specific types of tumors in animals: malignant gliomas in the brain and malignant schwannomas in the heart. The study also associates RF-EMF with rare liver and adrenal gland tumors.

Dr. Ron Melnick, Ph.D., chair of the International Commission on the Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (ICBE-EMF) and former senior toxicologist at the National Toxicology Program, responded to the findings by calling for urgent policy action.

“The evidence is now clear—cell phone radiation can cause cancer in animals in concordance with the tumor types identified in human studies of mobile phone users,” Melnick said. “As animal studies are essential for predicting cancer risk in humans, governments should develop science-based safety standards to protect human health.”

Despite mounting evidence, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has not updated its human RF exposure limits in nearly 30 years. A 2021 court order required the FCC to explain how its existing standards adequately protect the public, particularly children, but the agency has yet to comply or respond to inquiries about its timeline.

The results of the WHO review raise renewed concerns about the long-term safety of wireless technology and highlight the need for updated regulations based on current science.
