The Islamic Republic of Iran’s hold on power is at its weakest point since the regime came to power following the overthrow of the last Shah in 1979, American intelligence assessments provided to President Donald Trump indicate.

Multiple sources cited in a report published by The New York Times on Monday said that the regime’s position is continuing to weaken due to both widespread unrest, which culminated in a deadly government crackdown earlier this month, and the dire state of the Iranian economy.

Despite the weakening of the protest movement following the mass killings by pro-regime forces, the US intel assessments suggest that the regime in Tehran is continuing to lose support, in part as a result of its use of indiscriminate violence against demonstrators.

Trump has reportedly instructed his advisers to draft plans aimed at delivering a “decisive” blow to the Iranian government, while the US military continues to build up its forces in the region.

An American aircraft carrier battle group, led by the USS Abraham Lincoln, arrived in the US Central Command’s area of responsibility over the weekend, and is expected to reach the Persian Gulf within a day.

Earlier this month, the president repeatedly warned that if Iran kills protesters, the US will intervene on their behalf.

“President Trump is consistently briefed on intelligence matters around the world,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

“It would be a dereliction of duty as commander in chief if he were not regularly briefed on these matters. With respect to Iran, President Trump continues to closely monitor the situation.”
