Students in New York City have been regularly engaging in marijuana consumption, even before attending school. The New York Post has observed teenagers partaking in marijuana use outside schools in the mornings, and teachers have reported an alarming increase in the drug’s presence within school buildings.
NY State totally bungled the legalization of marijuana, resulting in hundreds of illegal shops selling marijuana products, without making sure they are not selling to minors; where as legal shops properly scan identification cards, like drivers licenses and official photo I.D’s.
Dozens of other states rolled out the legalization of marijuana in an orderly and sane fashion, NY chose a complex licensing process which as been a total failure, and is filled with illogical “woke” quotas.
According to a teacher at August Martin High School in Queens, students often arrive at school appearing sluggish, sleepy, with red eyes, and sometimes even carrying the scent of marijuana. This trend has raised concerns about its adverse impact on students’ ability to learn effectively, NY Post reported.
Mayor Eric Adams addressed this issue in his “State of Our Schools” address, emphasizing that the use of marijuana has escalated alongside the proliferation of illegal cannabis stores in every neighborhood across the city.
Incidents related to illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, alcohol, and the unauthorized use or possession of controlled substances or prescription medications have become more common. These incidents increased by 17% during the 2022-2023 school year compared to the previous year, as reported by city officials.
The New York Post’s observations revealed teenagers gathering to consume marijuana before school, with many students confirming that it is a common occurrence to see their peers coming to school under the influence and using vape pens within school premises. Plastic vape devices make it easier for students to bypass metal detectors and bring these devices into the school.
A student at August Martin High School mentioned that vaping is prevalent among students, often occurring in groups within school bathrooms. Despite school policies prohibiting such behavior, some students continue to engage in these activities, often feeling stressed, especially towards the end of the week.
However, marijuana use isn’t limited to the morning; some students reportedly engage in mid-day smoke sessions as well, as mentioned by an 11th-grade teacher at the school.
Outside Excelsior Prep High School in Springfield Gardens, Queens, students were observed smoking marijuana before classes. Some students openly admitted to consuming marijuana before school, claiming that it does not hinder their ability to learn. They cited their desire to pursue trade school programs as a motivation to avoid the drug’s potential negative impact.
While some students have experimented with marijuana in the past, concerns about the drug’s safety have led others to abstain. Officials have issued warnings about the potential for marijuana to be laced with deadly substances like fentanyl or other dangerous drugs.
A junior explained that he purchases marijuana from street vendors rather than from the new cannabis shops, expressing a lack of trust in the newly established stores. He follows a spaced-out consumption schedule to avoid addiction.
The proliferation of cannabis shops in the city has raised concerns among parents and community members about the lack of effective enforcement measures. Some have observed young individuals using drugs in public spaces, such as playgrounds.
In response to these concerns, state lawmakers introduced legislation requiring individuals under 21 caught smoking marijuana to attend a cannabis diversion program along with their parents.
