In a Manhattan courtroom, the civil fraud trial of former President Donald Trump took an explosive turn on a fateful Monday, with Trump’s emotions running high and accusations flying in all directions. The trial, brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, centers on a hefty $250 million lawsuit that alleges Trump inflated his wealth to secure more favorable loan and insurance terms over a decade.

The courtroom drama reached a crescendo as Trump, the 2024 GOP presidential frontrunner, erupted in a passionate outburst. Minutes after making a zipped-lips gesture to reporters during a morning break, Trump accused Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron, who had labeled him a fraudster, of being a “fraud” himself. Pointing vehemently at the judge, Trump exclaimed, “He called me a fraud, and he didn’t know anything about me! The fraud is on the court, not on me.”

This outburst came around noon, halfway through Trump’s roughly four-hour testimony. New York Attorney General Letitia James sat calmly in the front row of the gallery as Trump shouted and gesticulated with fury. Trump didn’t spare James either, shouting, “She’s a political hack,” and accusing her of using the case to further her political ambitions. He claimed she had leveraged the lawsuit to secure her current position.

Earlier in the day, Judge Engoron had reprimanded the former president for offering repetitive and non-responsive answers to simple “yes-or-no” questions from the AG’s attorneys. The judge reminded Trump that the courtroom wasn’t a political rally and urged him to stick to answering questions without giving speeches.

Engoron, who was presiding over the case due to its specific legal nature, even admonished Trump’s lawyers, insisting they “control your client.” He warned that if they couldn’t maintain decorum, he would consider negative inferences in Trump’s absence and even eject him from the witness stand.

The trial’s high-tension moments weren’t limited to the courtroom. As the morning progressed, Trump’s courtroom demeanor began to unravel, especially when questioned about the 2014 version of his financial statement. He lamented, “People don’t know how good a company I built! You know why? Because people like you try and demean me and hurt me, probably for political reasons.” His calm demeanor from earlier in the day transformed into visible agitation as he raised his voice for the first time.

Trump pointed out the discrepancies between his property valuations and those of the court and James. He highlighted the vast gap in valuations of Mar-a-Lago, with the court estimating it at $18 million and him claiming it’s worth as much as $1.5 billion. This discrepancy was a key point of contention in the trial.

In a significant pre-trial development, Judge Engoron had already found Trump responsible for some of James’ main fraud allegations. He cited a Florida official’s appraisal of Mar-a-Lago at a maximum of $27 million, a far cry from Trump’s claimed $1.5 billion. Evidence revealed during the trial indicated that Trump’s tax broker admitted to the property’s market value being $27 million, as it was categorized as a “social club” rather than a private residence, resulting in substantial tax benefits.

Throughout the proceedings, Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, raised objections and disputes with the judge’s actions. This further heightened tensions in the courtroom, as Trump continued to assert his innocence and the correctness of his actions.

The lawsuit brought by the New York Attorney General carries significant consequences for Trump. If the verdict goes against him, he could be required to pay millions and potentially relinquish control of his high-value properties, including Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan.
