The New York Post has the exclusive report of a band of moped-riding crooks have snatched Apple headphones right off the heads of at least 21 people in the city in the past month, according to the NYPD. Over the summer there was a rash of thugs on mopeds assailing people as well.
New York Post reporter, Tina Moore, writes that the crew – typically four thieves on two mopeds – first struck on Jan. 28, grabbing a 22-year-old man’s Apple AirPods Max headphones on Ninth Avenue and
West 26th Street in Chelsea and then speeding off, police said.
Moore goes in to say that The crooks have terrorized New Yorkers ranging in age from 18 to 41 across Manhattan — including one incident in Central Park — usually striking in mid-to-late afternoon, according to cops.
They pulled off five of the headphone thefts on Feb. 8. Then 10 days later, they ripped off eight people within an hour on Feb. 18, NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig told reporters Friday.
The thieves remain at large, and no arrests have been made.
“We’ve got to catch these guys,” Essig said.
Police released a photo of two suspects riding mopeds and a video showing one of them carrying two AirPod Max headphones in Washington Square Park.
The fancy devices that promise to cancel noise sell for about $549 each.
In another example of brazen daylight crime, teo thieves made off with $500,000 in jewelry after bursting into a Queens gem shop and beating an elderly employee Wednesday, cops said.
The men rushed into Diamond Collect near Prince Street and 39th Avenue in Downtown Flushing around 2:30 p.m.
According to police, the jewel thieves “punched, kicked and struck a 79-year-old female employee in the head with a handgun.”
Video of the robbery shows one of the men pushing past the woman as she flails at his feet.
His masked partner — with a reusable shopping bag in one hand — whips a gun out from his waistband as the elderly store worker raises her hand over her head in self-defense.
In another clip, the woman can be seen cowering on the floor as glass from a broken jewelry enclosure falls around her.
The two shoplifters removed about $500,000 worth of merchandise before fleeing on foot toward Prince Street.
Thugs on mopeds attacking innocent people and committing egregious crimes is not a new trend, in crime “decriminalized” NYC. With a political climate dominated by communists, disguised as “Democratic Socialists”, many who do not even believe jails should exist, this is yet another “low level” crime, which nobody seems interested in actually stopping. With politicians dead set on excusing any crime committed by black New Yorkers, by citing slavery and imaginary “institutionalized discrimination”, property crime has been relegated to the seriousness of jay walking, basically a slap on the wrist.
In August ABC7 reported:
There have been a series of attacks by moped-riding thieves across Manhattan.
The unsuspecting victims are walking on the sidewalk in the middle of the day when they become targets.
The three most recent attacks have happened in Inwood, Chelsea, and near the Guggenheim Museum on the Upper East Side. In all three muggings, the bikes easily jump onto sidewalks and speed away.
The brazen robbery in Inwood happened Saturday afternoon on Nagle Ave. Two men attacked and attempted to snatch a necklace from the 29-year-old victim.
