New York Sen. Chuck Schumer is calling on the federal government to investigate T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods, CBS News reported.
“They could cause infant fatalities or choking or falling or lacerations,” Schumer said. “That doesn’t mean the will, but they could. They were recalled for a reason.”
The Senator cited a Consumer Product Safety Commission report that claims the chain stores sold hundreds of recalled products, up until last month. The senator said some of the items could potentially be dangerous, according to CBS News
The products included sleepers linked to infant deaths, hoverboards that could explode — and Ivanka Trump-branded scarves that do not meet flammability standards, The N.Y Post reported.
In response, T.J. Maxx apologized for having recalled products left on its sales floors, issuing the following statement:
“At TJX, product safety is very important to us. We deeply regret that in some instances, recalled products were not properly removed from our sales floors despite the recall processes that we had in place. We are taking appropriate steps to strengthen these processes moving forward. We apologize to our customers and encourage anyone who believes they may have one of these products to participate in the recall”
The company then linked recall websites for all 3 of their stores, T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods.
The N.Y Post reported recently that Schumer appeared outside an Upper East Side branch of TJ Maxx to call for a federal investigation into the store and its sister outlets, Marshalls and HomeGoods, according to the N.Y Post
TJX admitted that they sold the products with the apology evidently, still Schumer feels this is not enough.
It’s not a bargain if it can hurt you, burn you, cut you or explode,” Schumer said. “It’s a danger that should be in the garbage, not a store shelf, or worse, under a tree.”
“The Feds must unwrap how holiday bargains were allowed to become products that never should have never been on the shelves to begin with,” he added.
Schumer said the three stores sold recalled goods “for several years” before a warning last month from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, including “during this holiday shopping season”, the Post reported.
“Many of them were products that could be highly hazardous and even dangerous,” he said. “They could cause infant fatalities or choking or falling or lacerations.
“They were recalled for a reason and not because they are safe…. There are a lot of stores here in New York and Long Island and the consumers shopping for these recalled products had no knowledge that the products were recalled — none at all. And that’s the worry,” Schumer continued outside the T.J Maxx store according to the N.Y Post.
