(TJV) The homeless man behind a horrifying SoHo stabbing that left a young woman clinging to life on Monday has a disturbing and violent history, including a previous attempt to murder a woman by pushing her in front of a subway train, according to amNY.
Identified by police as 46-year-old Muslim Brunson, the suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon following the brutal daylight attack on April 7. As amNY first reported, Brunson’s criminal record reveals a chilling pattern of unprovoked violence against women.
The most recent attack occurred around 3:04 p.m. Monday, when Brunson allegedly ambushed a 29-year-old woman walking east on Broome Street near Wooster Street. NYPD Assistant Chief James McCarthy said the suspect struck her from behind with a bottle. She escaped with minor injuries, but the violence escalated.
Brunson then reportedly took a shard of the shattered bottle and plunged it into the neck of a 25-year-old woman nearby. The young woman was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery. As of Tuesday morning, she was listed in stable condition, according to amNY.
“He came out of nowhere,” a witness told reporters. “She was bleeding badly. It was terrifying.”
But this wasn’t Brunson’s first violent, seemingly random attack. amNY sources confirmed that in October 2023, Brunson shoved a 30-year-old woman onto the tracks in front of an E train at the 5th Avenue-53rd Street subway station. The victim suffered serious injuries but miraculously survived. That incident came just moments after Brunson attacked another woman, age 26, at the same station.
Brunson was arrested for attempted murder in January 2024, yet despite his violent record, he was released — a detail amNY underscores as part of a troubling trend.
His record goes back even further. In July 2022, Brunson allegedly assaulted a police officer, and he’s had multiple encounters with police related to mental health, according to law enforcement sources cited by amNY.
“Mental illness might be a factor,” Chief McCarthy said at the scene. “But we haven’t confirmed that yet.”
A nearby security guard sprang into action after the stabbing, helping save the victim by applying pressure to her neck until EMS arrived. “I’m trained for theft, not this,” he said. “But this could be anyone — a daughter, a sister. I had to help.”
Despite his repeated violence and clear danger to the public, Muslim Brunson was allowed back on the streets, only to strike again. As more details come to light, officials and citizens alike are left questioning how many warnings it takes before someone this dangerous is kept from harming again — a question that amNY continues to investigate.
