New York City Councilman Yusef Salaam is under pressure to step down as the head of the council’s public safety committee after a contentious traffic stop revealed that he was driving in the city with out-of-state license plates and allegedly illegally tinted windows. Salaam is also facing criticism for allegedly embellishing details of the encounter with an NYPD officer in Harlem, during which he was pulled over for tinted windows but reportedly received leniency when he identified himself as a lawmaker, NY Post reported.

City Councilman Robert Holden expressed strong disapproval, stating that Salaam, as an elected official, was using his official title to evade the law and had lied about the incident until the NYPD clarified the facts. Holden called for Salaam’s resignation as the Public Safety Chair. Councilman Joe Borelli joined the criticism, emphasizing that the entire episode was recorded on police bodycam, and he lamented Salaam’s misrepresentation of the truth.

The controversy surrounds the fact that Salaam, a member of the exonerated “Central Park Five,” had out-of-state Georgia license plates on his car until recently, despite living in New York and holding office there for two years. According to Board of Elections records, Salaam registered to vote in New York in 2022 but failed to transfer his vehicle registration from Georgia within the required 30-day period.

The NYPD defended the officer’s conduct during the traffic stop, stating that he followed proper procedures and acted professionally. The bodycam footage showed Salaam immediately identifying himself as a city councilman, leading the officer to wish him a good night and walk away. However, Salaam complained later that the officer did not provide a reason for the stop.

Despite the controversy, Mayor Eric Adams commended both Salaam and the unnamed officer for displaying a “level of courteousness and professionalism” on WNYC’s “The Brian Lehrer Show” on Monday, avoiding direct commentary on the situation. Salaam, who has not responded to recent requests for comment, is facing calls from colleagues to step down as the chairman of the council Public Safety Committee. Councilmembers are critical of his alleged misuse of his title to avoid legal consequences and his misrepresentation of the incident.

Salaam unbelievably is an elected official, who was arrested and incarcerated for over 20 years for the horrific rape of an innocent woman in Central Park in 1989. The infamous crimes of April 19, 1989 shocked the entire world, as hordes of teens ran through the park, mugging, beating, harassing and raping and beating a woman, almost to death.

Salaam was one of the 5  cretins  arrested and convicted of the horror.  Kharey Wise, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Kevin Richardson, and Raymond Santana, became known as the Central Park 5;  who were exonerated of the most heinous crime; the rape and vicious assault of Trisha Meili, after someone else confessed.

None the less the Central Park 5, were in the park, robbing, beating and assaulting people. The media and radical left wing film makers tried to portray the miscreants as innocent choirboys, ignoring the other crimes they were committing on that night.

Yusef Salaam, who was allegedly the first to pummel Miss Meili’s head with Kharey Wise’s lead pipe, was fond of robbing people in Central Park.
