(TJV NEWS) Zohran Mamdani, a radical Marxist and outspoken anti-Israel extremist, has officially won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, according to the Associated Press. The final ranked choice tabulation released Tuesday confirmed Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo by a decisive 12-point margin, securing his place on the November general election ballot, AP reported.
Mamdani, 33, a Marxist ideologue and devout anti-Israel extremist, declared victory last week after early results showed him just shy of an outright win. With the release of final ranked choice tabulations, his lead is now indisputable. Cuomo, disgraced and desperate for redemption after resigning in scandal four years ago, was left humiliated.
Mamdani’s victory over Cuomo—once a towering figure in New York politics—marks a seismic shift in the city’s political landscape. At just 33, the democratic socialist state assemblyman surged from obscurity with a campaign promising free public services, massive new taxes, and a government-run economy. His platform includes free city buses, universal child care, and rent freezes—all paid for, he claims, by soaking the rich.
Mamdani also holds extreme foreign policy views. He has labeled Israel’s actions “genocide,” publicly backed the anti-Semitic BDS movement, and has previously pledged solidarity with Hamas-defending academics. His radical record has drawn sharp condemnation across the political spectrum.
Meanwhile, Cuomo’s floundering campaign served as a tone-deaf throwback. Instead of confronting the sexual harassment and nursing home scandals that ended his governorship, he leaned into highlighting his COVID-era leadership—a strategy that fell flat given the deaths of thousands of seniors under his administration’s policies. He failed to meaningfully engage voters and rarely stepped outside tightly controlled appearances.
Despite Mamdani’s fringe positions, his energetic campaign machine proved far more effective than Cuomo’s top-down, consultant-driven effort. The final results show the success of a grassroots, far-left insurgency that energized disillusioned progressives—and terrified establishment Democrats.
The AP notes that Mamdani declared victory immediately after polls closed on June 24, when early results showed him just shy of the 50% needed to avoid ranked choice tabulation. Now, with the count complete and certification expected July 15, the race is officially over.
Mamdani will face a crowded general election field, including incumbent Eric Adams (running as an independent after dropping out of the primary), Republican Curtis Sliwa, and independent Jim Walden. Cuomo, who conceded on primary night, left his name on the November ballot and hasn’t ruled out a rogue campaign.
If elected, Mamdani would become New York’s first Muslim mayor, first of Indian descent, and one of the youngest ever. For critics, however, it’s his ideological fervor—not his background—that defines him.
Republicans are already weaponizing his win as a cautionary tale. “This is the face of today’s Democratic Party,” one strategist said. “Anti-Israel, anti-police, anti-capitalist—and 100% unserious.”
The road to November now runs through Mamdani’s vision of a socialist New York. Whether voters will embrace that vision—or recoil—is the question that will define the coming months.
