Freshman GOP Rep. Mike Lawler currently holds a narrow lead over former Democratic Rep. Mondaire Jones in the competitive 17th Congressional District race in New York’s lower Hudson Valley. This data comes from a recent survey conducted by Jones’ own campaign, indicating a closely contested battle.

In a three-way race, Lawler stands at 46% compared to Jones’ 43%, with Working Families Party candidate Anthony Frascone securing 5%, and the rest of the voters remaining undecided. When focusing on a direct matchup between just Lawler and Jones, Lawler maintains a slim two-point lead, 47% to 45%, with an additional 7% still undecided, NY Post first reported

The poll, conducted by Jones’ pollster GBAO, showed that Jones has made gains since early August, reducing Lawler’s lead from seven points to just two. Back in August, Lawler held a 47%-40% lead, with Frascone at 6% and other voters undecided. The current survey, which was first reported by Politico, carries a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.4 percentage points, suggesting this race is a toss-up.

Over the last few weeks, Jones and his Democratic allies have intensified their efforts, flooding the airwaves with ads targeting Lawler’s stance on abortion, hoping to sway undecided voters. However, Lawler’s campaign has been dismissive of Jones’ efforts. Lawler’s spokesman, Chris Russell, emphasized that despite heavy financial support from far-left special interest groups, Jones still can’t produce a poll that shows him ahead. Russell further criticized Jones by pointing out his absence of a popularity rating in the memo, suggesting Jones has a “radical and extreme” record that voters are already aware of.

To understand the significance of this race, it’s essential to take a closer look at Mondaire Jones’ background. Jones, a progressive Democrat, first made his mark in the political scene in 2020 when he won the 17th District seat, becoming one of the first openly gay Black men elected to Congress. During his tenure, Jones quickly aligned himself with the far-left wing of the Democratic Party, joining the progressive “Squad,” which includes figures such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar. As a member of the House, Jones pushed for policies such as the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and police reform measures that went beyond what even some mainstream Democrats were willing to support. His stances earned him praise from the left but criticism from moderates and conservatives, who viewed him as too radical for the district.

After the 2022 redistricting, Jones made a controversial decision to leave the 17th District and run in the newly redrawn 10th District, which encompasses lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn. This move led to a bruising primary loss to Dan Goldman, forcing Jones into political obscurity. His departure from his original district also paved the way for Mike Lawler, a moderate Republican, to flip the seat by defeating then-Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, the head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, in one of the most significant upsets of the 2022 midterms.

Now, Jones is attempting a comeback, returning to the 17th District to challenge Lawler. Despite his hopes to recapture his old seat, the district’s shifting political landscape may prove challenging. The area includes Rockland County, parts of Westchester, and Putnam County, regions where Lawler has gained traction, particularly among voters concerned with crime, taxes, and inflation.
