Eric Adams Defies Trump Pressure, Stays in NYC Mayoral Race
(TJV NEWS) New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Friday that he will remain in the city’s closely watched mayoral race this fall, rejecting reports that President Donald Trump had urged him to bow out to boost former governor Andrew Cuomo’s chances against radical communist and vehement anti-Jewish bigot, the frontrunner Zohran Mamdani.
“I am running for re-election,” Adams told reporters outside Gracie Mansion. “There has been so much speculation, communications, announcements of what I’m doing, no matter what I have stated over and over again publicly. So I want to be clear with you. I am in this race, and I’m the only one that can beat Mamdani.”
The statement followed reports that Trump, a New York native, had pressed Adams to abandon his bid after weeks of lagging polls, even suggesting an ambassador post in Saudi Arabia as an incentive. Adams flatly denied that claim, saying Thursday: “I have never been promised a job.”
At Friday’s appearance, Adams refused to take questions, instead highlighting a campaign polo shirt that he vowed to wear “another four years.” He dismissed his rivals as “spoiled brats” who, unlike him, were not rooted in New York’s working class.
According to ABC News, Trump’s team had been fielding pleas from Republican donors in the city worried that Mamdani’s commanding lead could carry him to victory in November. Some strategists have floated that Cuomo could emerge as Mamdani’s most viable challenger if both Adams and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa were to exit the race.
The New York Times has also reported on discussions within the Trump administration about possibly offering Sliwa a position to draw him out of the contest.
Mamdani’s campaign, meanwhile, seized on the reports to cast Adams and his rivals as too entangled with Trump. “Zohran’s running to serve New York, not do the bidding of an authoritarian president and his billionaire friends,” his team said in a statement. “City hall should belong to the people – that’s what our city deserves and what Zohran’s campaign is all about.”
