As the crime rate continues to soar in New York City, this weekend was reminiscent of practically every weekend over the last several months. Gun violence has spiraled out of control as more New Yorkers lose their lives in this crime epidemic.
When gunfire erupted at a party in Brooklyn in the wee hours of Sunday, two people were left for dead and three others wounded.
According to a report in the New York Post, shortly after 12:30 am, NYPD officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the East New York section of Brooklyn. The police discovered three people in a vehicle outside of 101 Wortman Avenue and two other inside the building. They were all victims of gunshots.
Two men, both 36 years of age were pronounced dead at area hospitals, according to police. One man was shot in the head and the other in the face and chest.
The Post reported that another man, 51, who was shot in the back, chest and arm while inside the car was listed in critical condition at Brookdale Hospital. Also brought to Brookdale Hospital and listed in critical condition was a 32-year old man was who shot in the chest and neck, according to police. A 37-year old man was in stable condition at Montefiore Hospital in New Rochelle after being shot in the shoulder. He arrived at the hospital after being driven there before police arrived on the scene, according to the Post report.
Two others were shot inside the building, according to police.
At a Sunday afternoon briefing, NYPD Assistant Chief Judith Harrison said that the party was held at a site called the Brooklyn Garden and was attended by as many as 150 people when the gunshots rang out and pierced the night air.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that there was a verbal dispute inside 101 Wortman Avenue when an unknown male brandished a firearm and began shooting,” NYPD Assistant Chief Judith Harrison said, as was reported by the Post.
She added that, “He shot two people inside that location. Also shot at the corner of Georgia Avenue and Wortman Avenue were three males who were sitting inside a gray Infiniti sedan.”
The Post also reported that Deputy Chief John Chell said the car “looks like it was involved in a motor vehicle accident,” though it wasn’t clear when. Thus far, no arrests were made.
The East New York shooting occurred in the aftermath of 10 other people who were shot in New York City on Saturday in yet more gun violence that has plagued the city. The Post reported that in the Inwood section of Manhattan, a 15-year old boy was shot several times and is clinging to life. Police also said that a 19-year old woman was fatally shot in East New York. The woman was in the company of a 25-year old man, when a 22-year old man allegedly shot them both at 11:30 pm on Saturday.
In the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn, a man was attacked by a group of people and slashed with a machete around 6 pm on Saturday.
As to the aforementioned shootings, the Post reported that a 22-year old eyewitness told them that, “I was sleeping and that woke me up. I came downstairs, I opened the door and I saw the bodies. It sounded different from anything I’ve ever heard,” she said. “It was so close. It sounded really loud and fast. It was quick.”
The 19-year old woman was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital and the 25 year old man was injured in the gun melee.
The shooter was apprehended by police but as of yet, police have not announced what the charges are.
A neighbor in the area told the Post, “I heard about eight shots. After six, I got lost. I could tell right away they were gunshots. No, that ain’t no firecrackers. It sounded loud, boom, boom. It was a big gun.” The neighbor said an eyewitness told him that what prompted the shooting was a “stare.”
The neighbor added that, “He pulled out a gun and asked, ‘Why you looking at me?’ He turned his head. He didn’t think the kid had a gun. He pulled out his gun and shot him.”
