Northwell Health has appointed new leadership in its Western Region, which includes, Manhattan, Westchester and Staten Island. Beata Mastalerz, DNP, RN, has been named executive director of Phelps Hospital in Westchester and Daniel Bellis, MBA, has been promoted to deputy executive director of Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital (MEETH) in NYC. Dr. Mastalerz, who served as executive director of MEETH for the past year and a half, succeeds Eileen Egan, RN, JD, who has retired after a long, accomplished career at Phelps. Mr. Bellis, who worked alongside Dr. Mastalerz as associate executive director of operations at MEETH, is taking over her role as the hospital leader.

Dr. Mastalerz has made continuous strides in her career at Northwell’s Manhattan campus since joining the health system a decade ago. She started out as the senior director of perioperative services at Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital, where she supervised operating rooms, endoscopy suites and the same-day post-anesthesia care unit. Dr. Mastalerz later advanced to associate executive director of patient care services at MEETH with additional responsibilities at Lenox Health Greenwich Village. She led the fiscal, clinical, administrative and compliance teams for perioperative and patient care services for both facilities. In July 2022, she was promoted to the executive director role with responsibilities of managing day-to-day operations, steering the hospital’s growth trajectory and ensuring the highest standard of patient care.

Dr. Mastalerz, who served as executive director of MEETH for the past year and a half, succeeds Eileen Egan, RN, JD, (pictured above) who has retired after a long, accomplished career at Phelps. She initially joined the community hospital in 1981 as the charge nurse in the Intensive Care/Critical Care and Medical/Surgical Units, and she later spent 13 years in the Emergency Department before leaving to pursue a career in law.

During her tenure at MEETH, Dr. Mastalerz spearheaded the hospital’s strategic alignment within the Manhattan region and was instrumental in achieving strong financial performance with operating margins of 4.6% in 2022 and expected margins of 11.2% at the end of 2023. She proactively broadened the scope and complexity of the 17,000 ambulatory procedures performed at the hospital annually, acquired state-of-the-art medical equipment setting MEETH on the path to becoming a recognized center of excellence for robotic surgery and hernia repair, introduced comprehensive training to enhance robotic surgery services and prioritized improvements in patient experience.

Dr. Mastalerz collaborated closely with the Northwell Health Cancer Institute – which treats more New York residents for cancer than any other provider in the state – to advance oncology services in the region, which included relocating and expanding the Outpatient Infusion Center from Lenox Hill to MEETH. In addition, under her leadership, the hospital earned the coveted gold-level Go Clear Award from the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) for improving patient and staff safety through the elimination of operating room surgical smoke.

She earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Farleigh Dickinson University, a master’s degree in nursing administration from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Dominican College. In addition, Dr. Mastalerz successfully completed Northwell’s LeadNEXT leadership development program in 2019.

Mr. Bellis joined Northwell Health in 2017 and has since taken on progressively senior roles within the health system. In addition to his new position as deputy executive director at MEETH, Mr. Bellis will continue serving as regional vice president of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, a post he has held since March 2023. He commenced his career journey at Northwell in human resources and quickly advanced to operations, serving first as senior director and then as vice president of operations for the Western Region. In July 2022, he was appointed associate executive director of operations at MEETH, a role in which he was responsible for leading the facility’s support services and infrastructure construction projects.

Over the course of his career at the health system, he has made numerous impactful contributions, including developing and implementing strategic initiatives, as well as formulating plans to expand health care services throughout the Western Region. Mr. Bellis played a pivotal role in Northwell’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, overseeing testing and vaccine distribution within the region. He holds an MBA from Yale University and a dual bachelor’s degree in engineering science and organizational development from Vanderbilt University.
