For those aficionados of the Marvel Comics series, there is some interesting news on the horizon.
According to a report in the New York Post, this week, the iconic comic book company has unveiled a new incarnation of Captain America. This time around, the character who was created in 1941 and became a hero to America’s youth during World War II as a patriotic super soldier who often could be seen fighting the Axis powers, has now taken on a gay persona.
The new version of a gay Captain America is slated to make his debut in the role in June of this year in order to coincide with Gay Pride Month.
Entertainment Weekly reported that the new Captain America will be the alter ego of the character known as Aaron Fischer and will be included in the upcoming “United States of Captain America” comic book miniseries.
In the storyline, Fischer, who protects homeless youths and runaways, is discovered when Steve Rogers and three other characters launch a mission to find Steve’s missing shield, the report said, according to the NY Post report.
Originally created by cartoonists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby for Marvel Comics at the advent of World War II, Captain America is the alter ego of Steve Rogers, a frail young artist enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental “super-soldier serum” after joining the military to aid the United States government’s efforts in World War II, according to Wikipedia. Near the end of the war, he was trapped in ice and survived in suspended animation until he was revived in modern times. Although Captain America often struggles to maintain his ideals as a man out of his time, he remains a highly respected figure in his community, which includes becoming the long-time leader of the Avengers.
“Aaron is inspired by heroes of the queer community: activists, leaders, and everyday folks pushing for a better life,” creator Aaron Trujillo told the outlet.
“He stands for the oppressed, and the forgotten. I hope his debut story resonates with readers, and helps inspire the next generation of heroes,” Trujillo said, according to the Post report.
Aaron was illustrated by Jan Bazaldua, who told the publication he’s proud to have been a part of the first for the series.
“As a transgender person, I am happy to be able to present an openly gay person who admires Captain America and fights against evil to help those who are almost invisible to society,” Bazaldua said.
The first issue of the new miniseries hits the stands June 2.
