Virginia Maloney refuses debate with independent challenger, who calls out her mother Carolyn, NY Post reports.

Independent candidate Kyle Athayde is calling out Virginia Maloney, daughter of former Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, for refusing to debate him in their race for City Council District 4, which covers Manhattan’s East Side and Midtown, the New York Post first reported.

Athayde, a former chair of Community Board 6, told the Post, “The people of the East Side deserve to see more than a surname on the ballot.” He accused Virginia Maloney of relying on her family name rather than community service.

“Throughout my life, I have shown up and fought for my community. Virginia Maloney, on the other hand, eked out a primary win thanks to her last name and her mother’s connections — that’s not service, that’s succession,” Athayde said, according to the Post.

The independent candidate added, “So if Virginia doesn’t want to debate me, I’m more than willing to debate her more experienced mother Carolyn. Wherever and whenever Carolyn wants to talk about issues, I’ll be down,” the Post reported.

Virginia Maloney’s campaign declined to commit to a general election debate, saying the candidate had already participated in several forums during the primary. “Virginia Maloney is continuing to engage with hundreds of neighbors in the general, just as she has in the primary,” a spokesperson said, the Post first reported.

Carolyn Maloney herself dismissed Athayde’s stunt. “I’m not running. She’s running, and she’s really running her own campaign,” the former congresswoman told the Post, redirecting all questions to her daughter’s campaign.

Virginia Maloney won the Democratic primary in June to succeed term-limited Councilmember Keith Powers, narrowly capturing 53% of the vote after ranked choice voting went to the fifth round. She emphasizes her roots as a lifelong East Sider and her work with organizations such as Meta, Teach for America, and the Lexington Democratic Club, the Post reported.

Her mother, Carolyn Maloney, served on the City Council before a 30-year career in Congress, giving Virginia political connections critics argue have aided her rise. Athayde, in contrast, has focused on local community work and currently serves at NYC Health and Hospitals after a stint with the New York State Office for New Americans, according to the Post.

The three-way general election contest also includes Republican candidate Debra Schwartzben, making the race a competitive matchup on the East Side.

Athayde’s campaign, running under the Revive East Side line, emphasizes community engagement and transparency, arguing that voters deserve candidates willing to debate openly on the issues.

As the race heats up, the refusal by Virginia Maloney to debate her opponent has drawn scrutiny from both the public and the media, highlighting tensions around political dynasties and voter access to direct candidate engagement, the Post reported.

If unaddressed, Athayde’s challenge could become a focal point in the campaign narrative, casting a shadow over Virginia Maloney’s attempt to secure broad support in a district historically aligned with Democratic candidates.
