The year-round resort that has gained acclaim as a Hamptons icon, for its direct private beach access and saltwater pool, is expanding its spas.

This summer, Gurney’s Montauk will be opening the new Seawater Spa, which cost roughly $20 million to build.  As reported by the NY Post, the 30,000-square-foot, two-story space includes 19 treatment rooms, two of which are reserved for couples.  After five years of planning, the spa will offer a Himalayan salt room with walls and a massage table made of pure Himalayan salt crystals.

The room is said to be helpful in removing skin impurities, and for breathing difficulties. Other treatments include: a CBD-infused massage for pain reduction, a seaweed-leaf body wrap and a three-session scalp treatment to make hair fuller. Facials range from high-performance LED light therapy to New Age options which use amethyst crystals and reiki.

The spa makes use of products by Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare and One Ocean Beauty. Some of the oversized treatment rooms open out to their own private decks, with outdoor showers and bathtubs overlooking the beach, with bushes and trees strategically planted for privacy.

Architects from Alonso Balaguer Designs were tapped for the project.  A lot of effort went into enhancing the project’s sustainability.  To create the pools, which would use less water and energy, a “regenerative media filtration system” was used.  The new spa will add several more pools, in addition to the famed ocean-fed pool it currently has. The new space will include four 12-feet-long pools, each set to different temperatures ranging between 105 degrees Fahrenheit to 50 degrees. There will also be a eucalyptus steam room and a Finnish sauna, made using Alaskan yellow cedar wood.  For the final touch, the Peloton and Technogym-filled gym, weight room and lounge all now boast views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Gurney’s Executive Vice President Michael Nenner, said the construction, which endured delays due to Covid-19, supply chain complications and weather, was a prolonged labor of love. “I stood right here, shoveling snow,” Nenner said in April, during a visit to the construction site. “I’m so happy that we’re finally opening.”

According to a report on the vacationidea.com web site, Montauk’s year-round population stands at approximately 3000 people. In the summer, however, this vacation destination explodes with tourists and visitors from around the country and the world, for that matter.

The vacationidea.com report indicates that what attracts people to this “charming Long Island hamlet” are its “magnificent white sandy beaches, miles of hiking trails, wine tasting and excellent restaurants.”

The report adds that as a “popular weekend getaway from New York City, Montauk is full of history, from its 1797 lighthouse to the quaint Second House, a farmhouse built the same year.”
