Michael Cohen, the longtime personal attorney for President Trump, is having a good time in prison evidently.
Cohen is living “like a celebrity” in prison, is the “mayor” of his jail and has a job repairing fire hydrants, according to Page Six.
“People wish Michael Cohen is getting beaten up every day in prison — but he’s literally the mayor of the prison. He’s doing great: The other inmates call him ‘Mr Mayor,’” his attorney David Schwartz told Page Six after visiting Cohen. “He’s a celebrity in the jail. Everybody is coming up and shaking his hand. He’s enjoying hanging out with the other inmates.”
Michael Cohen, the longtime personal attorney for President Trump, was sentenced to three years in prison, after telling a New York judge that his “blind loyalty” to the U.S. leader led him to “cover up his dirty deeds” in December, TJV reported.
Cohen’s lawyers asked that he serve no prison time, but Cohen took “full responsibility” for his crimes, “including those implicating the president of the United States. He said that his allegiance to Trump led him “to take a path of darkness instead of light.”
Michael Cohen received three years in prison for a series of tax fraud and lying charges. In addition to the prison time which began on March 6, Cohen had to forfeit $500,000 in assets and pay $1.393 million in restitution to the IRS, Politico reported.
Cohen in 2018 pleaded guilty with New York prosecutors to a slate of eight charges of tax evasion, financial fraud and campaign finance violations. Trump himself was implicated in the campaign finance crimes, with prosecutors saying he allegedly directed Cohen in hush money payments designed to sway the 2016 presidential election. Cohen also later pleaded guilty with Mueller in November to lying to Congress about work he did during the election on an aborted Trump Tower project in Russia, Politico reported.
Prosecutors said that Cohen, at Trump’s direction, facilitated the payments — in violation of campaign finance laws — to porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal shortly before the 2016 election to buy their silence about alleged liaisons with the real estate mogul a decade before he ran for the presidency, TJV reported.
After Cohen was sentenced, the New York prosecutors announced they had reached a “non-prosecution agreement” with American Media Inc., which publishes the grocery store tabloid National Enquirer, to acknowledge that it paid McDougal $150,000 shortly before the 2016 election for her story about her claims that she had a months-long affair with Trump in 2006 and 2007 with the “principal purpose” of killing the information so it would not damage Trump’s chances of winning the election, TJV reported
Otisville, which has been dubbed one of America’s cushiest prisons, is a satellite camp with 120 inmates who live in dormitories with personal cubicles. It boasts a gym and tennis and basketball courts. Schwartz added, “Michael has a job fixing fire hydrants. He really enjoys his work. He looks great — he is tan, works out every day and has lost more than 30 pounds. He sleeps in a cubicle with a bed, night table and a desk … He is basically very unstressed. The only downside is he misses his family.”
