New York state officials issued a warning to school districts in the state, cautioning against implementing policies that could hinder the enrollment of migrant children, meanwhile the blame game is taking place as Democrats point fingers at each other for the migrant disaster.
Attorney General Letitia James and state Education Commissioner Betty Rosa delivered the threat of legal action, citing discriminatory practices discovered in some districts. These practices include requesting a voter ID from parents during registration and demanding proof of residency for more than 30 days or consistent address verification. The officials’ letter highlighted that such policies might violate constitutional and statutory protections, potentially subjecting school districts to lawsuits and legal consequences, NY Post reported
James and Rosa emphasized that every New Yorker, including noncitizens, undocumented students, and individuals without a formal lease, is entitled to a free public education according to state law. Public education is guaranteed for all children aged 5 to 21, irrespective of their immigration status, within the state of New York.
The surge of over 100,000 migrants, both adults and children, arriving in New York City from the southern US border since the previous year has prompted concerns about school enrollment. The upcoming school year anticipates a significant number of new students, with nearly 19,000 children expected to attend public schools in New York City alone. However, the city has not yet disclosed its plans to address this influx, despite the school year’s imminent commencement.
Mayor Eric Adams criticized Governor Kathy Hochul for her approach to handling the influx of migrants in New York City, asserting that she is mistaken in not compelling other regions of the state to share the responsibility of aiding asylum seekers. Speaking at an event at New York Law School, Adams expressed his disagreement with Hochul’s stance, emphasizing that since she is the governor of the entire state, all counties should contribute to addressing the crisis, NY Post explained.
While Governor Hochul shifted blame to President Biden in a recent address, Mayor Adams asserted that she was failing in her duty to coordinate a statewide response and was instead placing the burden solely on New York City.
Recently, the Biden administration distanced itself from the matter, asserting that the crisis stemmed from the leadership of the city and the state. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas provided vague recommendations to Hochul and Adams, which were met with a demand for more concrete action and funding from the city administration.
In other words, Adams is blaming Hochul who is blaming the Biden Administration who in response placed all the blame at Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Left out is the fact that Biden himself welcomed illegals into America, when he first took office promoting illegals to surge into the nation, many literally thanking Biden on camera back in 2021, while wearing Biden t-shirts.
Statewide enrollment figures for migrant children in New York schools remain uncertain. State education leaders emphasized the responsibility of school and district officials to provide educational support services to all students and their families, reiterating the obligation to ensure access to education.
This warning coincides with Governor Kathy Hochul’s call for more federal assistance to address the migration crisis. She placed partial blame on President Biden’s administration and urged them to provide shelters, funding, and expedited work authorizations for migrants.
