In a revelation that has sparked deep concern among supporters of Israel and defenders of democratic sovereignty, Breitbart News reported on Friday that a former Biden administration official, Ilan Goldenberg, admitted in an interview with Israel’s Channel 13 that the Biden White House actively sought to oust Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following the devastating October 7, 2023 Hamas terrorist attack.

According to the information provided in the Breitbart News report, Goldenberg — a former Biden administration aide who played a key role in sanctioning right-wing Israelis and later served as Jewish outreach director for Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign — made striking claims about discussions that took place at the highest levels of the U.S. government.

Goldenberg revealed that Biden officials, emboldened by President Biden’s temporary surge in popularity among Israelis and Netanyahu’s plummeting poll numbers post-October 7, had actively contemplated ways to force political change in Israel, up to and including non-democratic methods.

Speaking candidly to Channel 13, as detailed in the Breitbart News report, Goldenberg described an internal atmosphere within the Biden administration where officials floated the idea of exploiting Israel’s political instability:

“There were a lot of people who were talking about, including in the Oval Office at times, the idea of, like, the president going out and giving a speech… Opposition leader Benny Gantz was at 37 [seats] and Bibi was at like 15 [in polls], right? Like, he was very weak. Joe Biden was still incredibly popular in Israel.”

Goldenberg painted a picture of a strategy where Biden would either pressure Netanyahu into compliance with U.S. demands — particularly concerning ending the war quickly and negotiating hostage releases — or, if that failed, “scramble Israeli politics” and attempt to trigger new elections or, in Goldenberg’s words, “God knows what.”

This startling disclosure, as the Breitbart News report emphasized, raises critical concerns about the Biden administration’s respect for Israeli democracy, particularly during one of the darkest periods in the nation’s modern history, when Israel was reeling from an unprecedented terrorist onslaught that claimed over 1,200 lives and left hundreds kidnapped into Gaza.

Adding further weight to Breitbart News’s reporting, Goldenberg’s admission also highlights a glaring flaw in the Biden administration’s thinking: there was never any certainty that Hamas would honor any proposed hostage release deal.

As the Breitbart News report pointed out, despite repeated international negotiations, Hamas consistently refused almost every hostage deal and never committed to the full release of the Israeli captives. Therefore, the foundational premise of the Biden strategy — that quick concessions by Israel could lead to a broad, peaceful resolution — was based on wishful thinking, not reality.

Goldenberg’s claims also corroborate earlier incidents reported by Breitbart News, notably when President Biden openly supported then Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s controversial March 2024 speech urging Israelis to replace Netanyahu via new elections.

At that time, critics accused the Biden administration of grossly overstepping diplomatic norms by meddling directly in the internal political affairs of a close ally — an accusation that now seems even more credible given Goldenberg’s firsthand account.

Despite U.S. pressure, Prime Minister Netanyahu’s political fortunes began to recover sharply in the months following October 7, as reported by Breitbart News. His decision to defy Biden’s objections and launch an offensive into Rafah — a town on Gaza’s border with Egypt — yielded significant operational successes, including the rescue of hostages and the reported elimination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

These actions restored Netanyahu’s standing among the Israeli public and dealt a severe blow to Hamas’s operational capacity, even as Biden administration officials appeared increasingly frustrated with Israel’s determination to wage a full-scale war against Hamas in Gaza.

Goldenberg’s candid admission to Channel 13, as reported by Breitbart News, exposes the depth of the rift between the Biden administration and Israel’s elected leadership. It also raises troubling questions about whether the White House’s commitment to democratic principles extends equally to its allies — particularly when internal political preferences collide with democratic outcomes.

At a time when Israel was battling for its very survival against genocidal terrorism, the Biden administration, according to Goldenberg’s account, was actively seeking to leverage the crisis for political ends, rather than offering unconditional support to a democratic ally under siege.

As the Breitbart News report indicated, the revelations from Ilan Goldenberg serve as a stark reminder of the political pressures and backroom maneuvers that can shape international alliances, even in moments of profound human tragedy.

The Biden administration’s willingness to entertain non-democratic interventions in Israeli politics, even amidst the ashes of October 7, represents a deeply troubling episode in the history of U.S.-Israel relations — one that calls for renewed vigilance, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to democracy, sovereignty, and the right of nations to chart their own course without external interference.

  1. We all knew that. He just confirmed it. This case proves that when any PM of Israel has a choice between making the world happy (In this case America in 2023 and 2024) and his political survival – he chooses political survival without hesitation. Maybe ‘world opinion’ is not that important after all.
