The controversy began when promotional flyers for an upcoming “Israelfest,” organized by the school’s Israel Culture Club, were vandalized inside the school. As reported by the New York Post, the materials were torn down and discarded in boys’ bathroom urinals, with photos of the act circulating online and drawing sharp criticism from parents and community members.

The situation escalated further due to social media activity linked to a student with ties to the local school board. According to the New York Post, the 17-year-old daughter of a Scarsdale Board of Education member posted a comment on Instagram appearing to endorse the vandalism, which intensified the reaction from the community.

Following the backlash, both the student and her father issued public apologies. The student acknowledged that her comment was inappropriate and offensive, stating she regretted posting it and had removed it shortly afterward. Her father, a school board member, also addressed the matter in a message to parents, describing the incident as a serious learning moment for his family while reaffirming his commitment to his role in the district, the New York Post reported.

School officials responded swiftly, condemning the vandalism and the broader behavior surrounding the incident. Principal Kenneth Bonamo described the actions as unacceptable and indicative of intolerance, emphasizing that such conduct runs counter to the school’s values. Superintendent Drew Patrick echoed those concerns, highlighting what he described as a broader climate of rising antisemitism and increasingly polarized discourse, according to the New York Post.

Administrators also addressed concerns raised by some members of the community regarding the content of the flyer itself, which reportedly included a map of Israel that some critics said depicted disputed territories. However, school leadership made clear that any disagreement over the content did not justify acts of vandalism or expressions of hate.
