The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), in partnership with the Staten Island Council of Jewish Organizations (COJO), hosted its annual Free Bicycle Helmet Giveaway during the Shabbos Open Streets event in the Manor Heights section of Staten Island.

At the event, more than one thousand helmets were distributed to local children, with members of the NYPD and FDNY on hand to support and engage with the community.

COJO expressed gratitude to Hon. Ydanis Rodriguez, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation, and Hon. Roseann Caruana, Staten Island Borough Commissioner of Transportation, for their ongoing commitment to community initiatives.

“Commissioner Rodriguez and Commissioner Caruana have not only helped bring the Shabbos Open Streets program to life — a program that since 2023 has addressed the safety and recreational needs of Staten Island’s growing Chassidic population — but have also enhanced the overall quality of life for the broader community,” COJO stated. “This helmet giveaway is yet another example of DOT’s dedication to public safety, particularly the safety of our most valuable resource: our children.”

COJO also extended its sincere appreciation to Chief Melissa A. Eger, NYPD Staten Island Borough Commander, and Chief David Simms, FDNY Staten Island Borough Commander, for their participation and visible support.

“A successful community event requires the partnership of key stakeholders,” said COJO leadership. “The presence and engagement of our police officers and firefighters send a powerful message — that together, we are committed to making our neighborhoods safer and more united for all.”
