Mikie Sherrill Keeps NJ Blue as She Trounces MAGA candidate Jack Ciattarelli in Gubernatorial Race – Her Silence on Rising Antisemitism Shadows Her Victory

By: Andrew Carlson

In a race that captivated both national observers and local voters, Fox News announced on Tuesday night that Democratic Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli, securing her place as New Jersey’s 57th governor and the first Democratic woman ever to hold the office. Her win keeps the Garden State in blue hands after a fiercely contested, sometimes ugly campaign that drew intense scrutiny from across the political spectrum.

Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, celebrated her victory by promising “to listen, to lead with courage, and to never forget who I serve.” Yet as Fox News analysts were quick to note, her tenure as a congresswoman — particularly her record on Israel and her deafening silence in the face of New Jersey’s spiraling antisemitism crisis — casts a long shadow over her ascent to the state’s highest office.

Behind the historic headlines lies a troubling truth: Sherrill’s political record, marked by cautious equivocation and selective outrage, has often placed her at odds with Jewish communities in her own state — and with allies of Israel across the nation.

As Fox News reported, Sherrill’s victory over Ciattarelli was a symbolic triumph for Democrats in a year of mounting uncertainty. The 52-year-old congresswoman won on a platform emphasizing affordability, housing reform, and “making New Jersey work for everyone.” Her campaign narrative — a blend of centrist pragmatism and maternal empathy — resonated with suburban voters weary of partisan rancor.

Yet the glow of victory may prove fleeting. Beneath the celebratory tone of her post-election remarks, critics see a pattern of moral evasiveness and policy inconsistency, especially regarding one of New Jersey’s most urgent social problems: the alarming rise in antisemitic hate crimes.

According to state data cited by Fox News, New Jersey ranks among the top three states for antisemitic incidents nationwide. Synagogues in Bergen, Essex, and Middlesex counties have faced repeated vandalism, while Jewish students across the state report harassment on college campuses — much of it fueled by anti-Israel activism masquerading as political speech.

And yet, as Fox News commentators have noted, Sherrill has been notably passive on the issue. While she has offered occasional platitudes condemning “hate in all forms,” she has failed to articulate a concrete plan to combat antisemitism — a striking omission given New Jersey’s large and deeply engaged Jewish population.

In contrast, her campaign devoted considerable energy to issues such as  abortion access, housing affordability, and green energy — priorities that, while important, stand in stark relief to the fear gripping Jewish communities across her state.

“Mikie Sherrill has shown plenty of passion for progressive talking points,” one commentator told Fox News, “but when it comes to confronting the antisemitism poisoning our schools, universities, and neighborhoods, she’s gone remarkably quiet.”

Sherrill’s reluctance to confront antisemitism domestically mirrors her troubling record on Israel while serving in Congress. As Fox News highlighted in multiple reports, Sherrill has frequently criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s military strategy, describing it as “a grave humanitarian crisis” responsible for “more than 25,000 casualties, including thousands of children.”

In statements delivered earlier this year, Sherrill asserted that she could not “condone” Netanyahu’s approach, calling instead for “a significant shift in military strategy.” The phrasing was more than just a diplomatic rebuke — it was a public indictment of Israel’s right to self-defense amid ongoing Hamas rocket attacks and hostage-taking.

As the Fox News report pointed out, Sherrill’s criticism mirrored talking points used by progressive lawmakers aligned with the far-left “Squad,” whose hostility toward Israel has grown increasingly overt since the October 7 Hamas massacre. Her refusal to acknowledge that Hamas, not Israel, bears responsibility for the suffering in Gaza underscores a dangerous moral blindness — one that equates a democratic nation defending its citizens with a terrorist organization dedicated to genocide.

“Sherrill’s rhetoric may sound measured,” Fox News political analyst Laura Ingraham observed, “but it plays directly into the narrative that delegitimizes Israel and emboldens its enemies.”

While the congresswoman has stopped short of endorsing the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, her public statements have often parroted its central assumptions — that Israel’s military actions are inherently oppressive and that its leadership acts with disregard for human life.

Such remarks have not gone unnoticed. Leaders from New Jersey’s Orthodox and Conservative Jewish communities have expressed dismay over what they describe as Sherrill’s “selective empathy” — compassion for Palestinians under Hamas control but silence for Israeli victims of terror.

“When Israeli families are murdered in their homes, she says little,” one community leader told Fox News. “But when Israel defends itself, suddenly she finds her voice.”

As Sherrill prepares to assume office in January, New Jersey faces a cultural and moral crossroads. Antisemitism has reached levels unseen in decades, intensified by the global fallout from the Israel-Hamas conflict. Synagogues have been threatened. Jewish-owned businesses have been targeted. Schools have faced walkouts protesting Israel’s existence.

Yet, as Fox News reported, Sherrill has offered no plan for addressing the issue — no task force, no policy proposal, not even a meaningful acknowledgment of the fear Jewish residents feel.

Her pattern of cautious equivocation on antisemitism mirrors the broader malaise afflicting parts of the Democratic Party, where condemnation of antisemitism is often diluted by whataboutism and moral equivalence. In Sherrill’s case, her prior criticisms of Israel’s conduct in Gaza — amplified by left-leaning media outlets — have eroded confidence among Jewish voters that she understands the distinction between moral outrage and moral confusion.

“A leader cannot credibly fight antisemitism while vilifying the only Jewish state,” a Fox News editorial observed. “Governor-elect Sherrill will have to decide whether she stands with Israel or with those who seek its destruction.”

Indeed, Sherrill’s silence during the antisemitic flare-ups that have followed pro-Hamas rallies in Newark, Montclair, and Jersey City is particularly glaring. While she has condemned “hate,” she has conspicuously avoided naming its source: the anti-Israel radicalism that has taken root in American political discourse.

Sherrill’s defenders point to her military service — nine years as a Navy helicopter pilot — as evidence of her patriotism and courage. But as Fox News commentators have noted, leadership in the cockpit does not necessarily translate to leadership in a moral crisis.

The new governor’s record in Congress suggests a pattern of deflection and political expediency. When antisemitic outbursts erupted among fellow Democrats in Washington, Sherrill was silent. When her colleagues in the “Squad” accused Israel of apartheid, she declined to rebuke them. When progressive activists defaced synagogues in solidarity with Hamas, she issued a generalized call for “peace.”

Such moral timidity is not leadership; it is appeasement. And it sends a devastating message to Jewish New Jerseyans who once believed that their state — home to one of the largest Jewish populations in America — would remain a bulwark against hate.

As Fox News reported in its post-election analysis, Sherrill’s task as governor will be not only to navigate New Jersey’s economic and fiscal challenges but also to restore public trust in her moral compass.

“Her words about affordability and housing are fine,” Fox News anchor Bret Baier noted, “but what’s she going to do about the moral crisis right here at home — the rise in antisemitism, the intimidation of Jewish students, the erosion of tolerance?”

New Jersey, a state with a proud tradition of civic pluralism and faith-based tolerance, deserves leadership that confronts hate without equivocation. Sherrill’s predecessors — both Democratic and Republican — made a point of visiting synagogues after attacks, meeting Jewish leaders, and reaffirming Israel’s right to exist without condition.

As the Fox News report indicated, the new governor’s challenge is not merely political; it is existential. Can Mikie Sherrill, who has too often indulged anti-Israel narratives and ignored antisemitic threats, now rise to the demands of moral leadership?

The early signs are not encouraging. Her election-night speech made no mention of antisemitism, no acknowledgment of the Jewish community’s fears, and no indication that she intends to chart a different course.

New Jersey, once a model of civic strength and diversity, now faces a governor whose record suggests moral hesitation in a time that demands moral clarity. For the state’s Jewish citizens, for friends of Israel, and for all who believe in the fight against hate, that hesitation is not just disappointing — it is dangerous.

As one Fox News commentator put it bluntly: “Governor-elect Sherrill has promised to lead with courage. The question is: courage for whom?”

  1. This form of cowardly reporting, refusing to simply state facts and pretending there is any question about the future conduct of an enemy antisemite politician, is a betrayal of TJV readers. (Fox is quoted heavily for this report, despite the fact that it has always been a political adversary of Israel and the Jewish people, in league with Muslim terrorist CAIR.
