One of New York City’s most iconic restaurants is pulling back the curtain on decades of celebrity sightings, revealing behind-the-scenes stories of A-list diners — including the actress who once triggered an unprecedented paparazzi swarm, according to the New York Post.
At the center of the buzz is Ariana Grande, who, despite being better known today as a global pop superstar, caused what insiders described as the most chaotic media frenzy the restaurant has ever experienced. The New York Post reported that when Grande visited the famed Central Park eatery, photographers flooded the property, even attempting to snap pictures through bushes surrounding the venue.
Co-owner Jim Caiola recalled that the situation became so overwhelming that Grande had to be escorted out through the kitchen — a rare move for the restaurant. According to the New York Post, it remains the only time staff had to take such measures due to paparazzi pressure.
While Grande’s visit stands out for its intensity, she is far from the only celebrity to have made an impression at Tavern on the Green. The New York Post detailed a long list of famous guests who have passed through its doors, each leaving behind their own memorable stories.
Actor Nicolas Cage, for example, became a frequent visitor at one point, dining at the restaurant three times in a single week. Meanwhile, music legend Aretha Franklin once made a special request during her visit, asking staff to prepare mac and cheese while she dined with industry executive Clive Davis.
The restaurant has also hosted major cultural events, including a star-studded afterparty for the hit musical Hamilton following the Tony Awards. The New York Post noted that guests at the event included icons like Barbra Streisand, underscoring the venue’s long-standing appeal among elite entertainers.
Other celebrity encounters have been more low-key but equally memorable. Actor Bryan Cranston once sat down with the restaurant’s chef ahead of a Thanksgiving meal to review menu options in advance. Meanwhile, Jon Hamm connected with staff over shared experiences working in the service industry, highlighting a more personal side of celebrity visits.
Even small details have stood out over the years. The New York Post reported that Rihanna once sent staff scrambling when she requested sweet potato fries — a simple order that nonetheless created a flurry of activity behind the scenes.
For the restaurant’s team, these encounters are more than just anecdotes — they are part of a legacy. Chef Bill Peet, who has worked closely with many of these high-profile guests, has even compiled stories and recipes into a forthcoming cookbook celebrating the venue’s history.
Despite the constant presence of celebrities, staff say the goal has always been to maintain a welcoming atmosphere rather than cater exclusively to star power. Still, as the New York Post makes clear, there is almost always a recognizable face somewhere in the dining room.
